What painting would you own?

This is one of my favorites. It would hang in my kitchen so I can get pumped when I'm cooking!

Although the cave paintings are a close second, and I would never have thought of that. It's a great idea!

This painting has recently been shown as part of an exhibition of Hokusai's works at the British Museum, and has attracted large numbers of viewers - so many that tickets are now fully sold out for the complete run and are only available by cancellation on a first come first serve basis. Somehow Japanese art and design seemed to capture the essence of satisfying cleanliness way before we in the west caught on and I wonder (not having any knowledge of art history as such) how much influence they had on schools like the Bauhaus and Glasgow of the C20?

Ooh, I like that one. One of the GF's favourites too. I learned an interesting thing recently...as westerners we look at it from left to right..."read" the painting from right to left instead and get a different "feeling" from it...

Wow, I bet he would be so proud and humbled by a sold out show!! This was probably the first piece of art I ever saw as a kid and realised there's way more in the world than doodling and cartoons, you know?

Very tough choice. I have stood in front of a Monet-- a small one-- and been mesmerized by the colors. But I don't think I could live with a painting that blew me away on a daily basis. So it probably would be this, by Theodor Kittelsen (posting a link because I couldn't find a good size image to post):

The title, the Princess Collecting Marsh Wool, is enigmatic. Also, she looks almost exactly like me, braid and all. I would even wear that dress.

Nice topic. I've always been partial to Raft of the Medusa by Gericault because I like painting that tell a story. However, I really wouldn't want that horrorshow darkening up the room. Although maybe in an office room that my house doesn't have. But definitely not in a main room. I'd want something bright and playful, but I can't think of what that would be. Maybe something like this.

Guess even my little pony had to grow into adolescence! I've seen 'The Raft' Cag, and yes it is an imposing piece. Agreed that in your home setting something more ........ contemplative (perhaps) is needed.

Gosh! What a beautiful picture Deer! It took some tracking because the link wouldn't ....err.....link, but what a find! Haunting in it's effect and certainly one I'd hang. Love discovering a new artist as well.

Wish I knew how to Av. My tablet doesn't show URL's (is that what they're called), and even if it did I wouldn't have the faintest idea how to 'cut and paste' it into the post!

IIRC however, after some initial digging around in collections of the artists work, I actually did what I should have done in the first instance (actually wrong, because I'd had missed some terrific pieces that I really like - they have an 'illustration' like quality - and indeed may well be so, but very distinctive) and googled theodor-severin-kittelsen prinsessen-som-sanker-myrullg which brought it up. I knew it was the right one because of the princesses beautiful braid!
