Went to see Alien: Covenant this past weekend and I enjoyed the film in general.
My first viewing of Prometheus left me feeling disappointed in that the story went in a different direction than I had hoped and the plot and characterizations seemed a bit stiff. However after having watched Prometheus a number of times I think I appreciate the film a great deal more as I seem to understand the purpose better.
Covenant does interlock with Prometheus so it is a continuation of the story that will eventually lead to Alien however the new film took a bit of an awkward turn when viewed through the narrative of the previous film. In general though Covenant is more of an Alien film than Prometheus 2 but that appears to be by design.
Its difficult to scare an audience that has grown up on all of the previous films and Covenant seems to struggle with generating the level of genuine tension that the first couple of films in the series did but it doesn't fail completely. I liked the story, the direction and the acting and I'd say that Covenant ranks fairly high on the list Alien films with regard to quality of entertainment. It may even rate as high as #3 but I'm still evaluating what I have seen.

I thought Prometheus was brilliant. Covenant was almost as good. Or maybe just-as-good. But a mature assessment would prolly have to wait, as TOM said, for further reflection and repeated viewings.
If one didn't like Prometheus, this would prolly be seen as passable Aliens mayhem marred by portentous hokum, albeit hokum with great direction, cinematography, production design, acting, music, etc.

Haven't seen it yet, but saw a YouTube video that drew attention to all of the unanswered questions and plot inconsistencies that are emerging as they try to stitch Prometheus into the Alien franchise. Suddenly my failure to get what was going on in Prometheus didn't seem so silly after all. I will see the film - but probably not on the big screen. (Nb. I did like Prometheus for all the problems I had with it.)

Ok, finally got to see it and in the main was happy with it. At the end it had seemed to answer many of the questions raised by Prometheus - but that notwithstanding, there still remain puzzling elements that need addressing (how for example do we get from the end of Covenant to the beginning of Alien - there isn't many years between them I think, and also, why did the engineers, once having created humanity, decide to snuff it out?) I'm guessing that another film may yet be inserted into the prequel story line to tie things up finally - but in the main I think Covenant has done a good job in pulling what could easily have been two franchises (and might well have been intended to be) into one.

I have to say I was concerned about the idea of genetically engineered Alien. They rake on some of the DNA of their host. It kinda messed up the Alien universe for me. At the end of Alien Covenant theyd already interfaced with human DNA. To me that put a kink in the time space continuum
Maybe I need to watch it again - may have missed something.

and deserves a mention.
