Meh...saw it in the bookshop on the weekend. Maybe he should first write the end of the story he's busy with before gadding about with historical prequels...

Anyway, I'm re-reading Bakker, The Darkness That Comes Before.

I agree, but I'll take what I can get.

I have resolved not to read it until the main story is finished.

So...probably never. :D

About the same time I'll get around to reading those Esslemont Malazan books.

I just can't get into Esslemont. I know he influenced the main series, and I respect that, but his characters just don't have the same depth. Erikson will rip out your heart and serve it to you on a platter and you'll thank him and ask for more. That's tough to compete with.

Eh, they're different, but I like them both (mostly).

Anyway, on to The Warrior Prophet.

As you know I loved this series. So different and dark. As much as I loved it I found it even more enjoyable upon a reread. Knowing the whole story gives the reader a different perspective on many things and the books really open up.

Are you finding any new insights through the reread?
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. Seventh Decimate, by you-know-who.

Boy, Prince Bifalt sure chews his cheek a lot...

Diverting. I'm not sure if it's very good, yet.

Well. Right. My expectations were not too high, since I'm no fan of SRD's Last Chrons. I sort of enjoyed his last two novellas, and Seventh Decimate seems like a continuation, in a certain way.

Bifalt is still a problematic character to me, too stuck in his habits when e'one can see there are better choices to make.

It's a fast and easy read. Not too deep.
