In a sense, but very specific "slaves."

Ah, maybe this is it: Carmag was built on the bones of the High King's Monomach's failed Apts.

Perfect. I couldn't remember that one.

Thank you! I'm not sure where in the Mordant's Need books that information is located, Sanity. It may be in the early part of the story where Master Quillon is telling Mordant's backstory to Terisa. Or, it may be later in the story where some information is being given to Terisa by either Artagel or Geraden. The answer just "popped" into my head, IS, and I went with it because it felt right. (It probably didn't hurt that I've read the Mordant's Need story six times.)

New question: According to what Geraden tells Terisa, Eremis has lost all of his family in Esmerel. How were they lost?

A decent guess, Av, but that's not it.

I am probably conflating two stories into my guess but did not Eremis arrange for all his brothers to be suspicious of each other and eventually eliminate each other?

I do remember Eremis stating that he was conniving and got his brothers to work against each other I just don't remember for sure if it lead to them killing each other off.
Not every person is going to understand you and that's okay. They have a right to their opinion and you have every right to ignore it.

On one point you are right, Sam, in that Eremis arranged for his brothers to be suspicious of each other and work against each other.

However, that is not the reason Geraden gives Terisa for why Eremis has no family living.

A decent guess, but not the right one, alas.

A hint: it was a disaster that got them all, according to Geraden.

You've got it, IrrationalSanity! The answer is in the part of the story where Geraden is trying to persuade the Termigan to fight for King Joyse:
"You could attack him there. In the Care of Tor. In his home, Esmerel."

Esmerel? Terisa was surprised. That didn't make sense. 'What about his father--his brothers?" she asked stupidly. They would have betrayed him long ago. "He couldn't use Esmerel."

Geraden turned to her. Frowning at the distraction, he said, "Eremis doesn't have any family. They all died in a fire years ago. Some of his servants in Orison are people who used to serve his father. I've heard them talk about it."

So that also was a lie, just another of Eremis' attempts to manipulate her. She ground her teeth. Suddenly, she felt a fierce desire to do what Geraden was proposing: ride into the Care of Tor, ride to Esmerel, attack-- Get even with that bastard.
The next question is yours, and congratulations!

Thanks!

Next question - What convinced Lebbick that Terisa was right about Gereden being innocent of Nyle's murder, and why did that work when nothing else did?
(Note: not really a complicated answer - don't make it harder than it really is)

I will wait a week to give somebody else a chance to answer. If nobody does by then, I'll give my guess!
