Stuck at home, it is amazing how many things I am seeing which require attention or repair.
I struggle with painting the house. I make a mess looking at work really.
One day.
One day i will paint the house.
It will be soon. It will have to be.
Otherwise the missus may trade me in.
Gees, things were easier when North Korea threatened to loose rockets!

Room here for a study on the effects of existential threats on the sociodynamics of intrafamilial reciprocal nudge theory methinks!

Here's what I think today.
I tried to get on the Watch on Thursday to wish people a Blessed Pesach/ Passover, but was unsuccessful. Well, Blessed Passover, Happy Easter, Happy Spring everyone!
We're in day 2 of statewide lockdown. It is quieter than it's ever been. All I can hear is someone pounding (using the enormous mortar and pestle things to beat their food to a pulp) and some voices, and lots of birds lately. I love it.
I am ignoring most of my messages as they are from my students' parents and I am not dealing them on the weekend. However, I am actually calling people I consider friends, something I rarely do, just to say hello and how you holding up.
I am exercising, reading, playing my guitar, writing a song or two, weeding the garden (long overdue), and just... existing. And it's not bad.

I'm a pretty solitary person by nature, and even my job hasn't changed much (essential warehouse worker for the win) - so I really haven't been affected as much as most people.
Did have a scare last night - I have what's basically PTSD from my old neighbor repeatedly threatening to break down my door and kill me and fun stuff like that. That was over 10 years ago, and I like to think I have made some progress mentally - I no longer spend the entire night awake if I hear a strange noise outside. So last night when the outer door opened and didn't close, I was slightly annoyed instead of in a state of heightened anxiety because of course it was just my neighbor forgetting to close it again. Right?
Nope, turns out there was an actual prowler who was lurking outside my door and probably would have broken in if my neighbor hadn't called the police.
And they didn't catch them.
It's scary out there, and the scary people are getting desperate.

Damn Sorus,
I remember a conversation in the past fortnight with some friends and colleagues - when we were anticipating really bad Covid19 numbers in Australia - where the conversation kept coming back to the socioeconomic fallout and the lengths that people will go to and what the distraction would mean to establishment. Get an extra lock and put a light on. Thank the neighbor. Hope you are okay.
European Commission - Ursula von der Leyen just gave a speech about circular supply chains and smaller and varied supply models rather than one big one. Pointed to commercial, service and environmental impacts. I think she is a bit of alright! Bless my soul!
Have a good day everyone, and be safe.

All the time I've spent trying to convince myself that they're not really out to get me, and now this. At least it was just some random weirdo, not anything personal. Some random, not very smart or subtle weirdo who took the time to steal all the motion-detecting lights before trying to get inside. If he'd just gone through the door like a normal person he could have gotten away with a lot more before someone called the police.
Anyway, that door has a shiny new lock on it, and I have one more weak spot to reinforce before I am truly ready for the zombie apocalypse.
Someone also tried to break in through a window at work last night. Not the first time, but the level of desperation and whatnot has definitely reached a scary level.

Just watched a terrific YouTube ted talk by Jim Holt called Why Does the Universe Exist in which he speculates about different realities, say one win which there is a deity, one hundred percent malevolent but only eighty percent efficient - then stops in thought and says "that sounds about right come to think of it". Terrific stuff that I recommend you take a watch off.

Developers of a new 'smart' toilet designed to collect data pertinent to health from the stools and urine of users have said that the device, in order to differentiate between different individuals using the appliance, will rely on a variation of the normal face-recognition programs. Don't think about it - it's nasty.
In a tangentially related thought, it occurred to me that, spread as it is, via the droplets of water vapour in our coughs and sneezes, I suppose the technical parlance would say that transmission occurs via our aerosols.

In recent weeks the tear-stained features of exhausted nurses at the ends of their shifts has become a common sight on the front pages and in news reports of the covid-19 outbreak. The toll that this outbreak is taking on our health professionals is beyond question - and is wholly avoidable; it stems in totality from the excessively long shifts these workers have been expected to work - commonly twelve hours or more - going back to long before the current problems we face.
The rationale behind this excessive demand placed upon key professionals, whose sharpness and unbroken attention to the job in hand is quite literally a matter of life and death, is that "the change-over process is to difficult to be done more than at the minimum of times possible in any given day'.
Bollocks. If this is a factor in the meltdowns so graphically illustrated by these pictures - and it beyond question is - then all efforts should be made, no stone unturned, into expediting the process such that these abuses of our key personnel are stopped in their tracks at the earliest possible point. It cannot be beyond our collective ingenuity to develop and implement a change over process that allows for three eight hour shifts - and to make this the legal maximum that any worker in the health or care sector can work.
It is not the number of shifts per week that pulls it out of people - though two consecutive days off per week is still really important for recharging ones batteries - it is shift duration. Six hour shifts can be rattled off almost as infinitum: by the end of eight hours one has reached the end of the point where one can operate effectively and efficiently. Beyond this point the productivity (for want of a better phrase) drops away rapidly, the toll both physical and emotional rises exponentially, and the resulting mistakes, the loss of empathy for patients (and customers because this applies to workers across the board) the savaging of the mental resources, rises in tandem.
In the care sector, the twelve hour shift pattern commonly worked results in a mental barrier being erected that destroys the empathy so critically needed by workers in this field, where patience and forbearance way beyond the norm are paramount factors in preventing the abuses so commonly seen in the lurid press releases of today. I would bet a pound to a penny that ninety nine percent of such incidents occur after the eight hour hour watershed I refer to above has passed. In shops and hospitality workers become more dis-abligeing, in factories and delivery accidents more frequent. Across the board this watershed exerts its malign effect and it is time to do something about it. The introduction of an eight hour maximum working day - and come to that a two consecutive day break each week - except in the most unavoidable of exceptions (say a research scientist who must check his data/experimental apparatus daily) would have nothing to do with 'workers rights' (though these would by side-effect be improved as well) - it would be about increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of workers in our society across the board so that we might all profit thereby. The country would be better for it: we as individuals would be better for it and the general quality of life of our society better for it. Win-win I'd say.

Fatigue is a killer on the highways too Peter. For longhaul truck drivers who do not stop for scheduled breaks, and spend 5 days driving for 14 hours a day, an accident is just a couple of seconds of lost concentration away.
I saw a photo of a British woman who had just come off a 48 hour shift in hospital, and was thinking they must be short of nurses and doctors.
Fatigue does funny things to you. Complacency kicks in, and mistakes happen.
Have I mentioned already that I miss going to the pub? Ah well.....
Speaking of fatigue. I think we are in the thick of an exhale in terms of COVID-19 in Australia. I hope complacency does not feature anytime soon.

I realize I'm in the minority regarding my level of distrust of 'smart' technology up to and including phones, but why the frak would you want that in your house? Unless you're trying to win HIPAA Violation Bingo?peter wrote:Developers of a new 'smart' toilet designed to collect data pertinent to health from the stools and urine of users have said that the device, in order to differentiate between different individuals using the appliance, will rely on a variation of the normal face-recognition programs. Hey Kizza!
Just read that our pubs may stay closed till frikkin' Christmas! That is simply a death sentence to most of them; they might as well throw in the towel now! Poor buggers.
