I had a cat develop a huge abscess on her face after a wound. I was able to get powdered antibiotics and put it in her drinking water. Since she was old, she drank a lot of water so it worked well. She survived that and many other adventures before passing away blind, deaf, and toothless at 23. (What is that in cat years, anyway?)

Anyway, much better than fighting to shove pills down cat's throats. Done plenty of that! And I don't like needles, either.

Sarge, people suck. And then there are people like you, who are the opposite of suck. You give. We need more like you. |G

Still no real change unfortunately. Vets did some scans and ruled out tumors etc. but she's on a feeding tube now, nothing to do but hope she starts eating by herself. :(

Oh no .. thats awful news. Hoping she picks up soon.

When shes discharged you could try rubbing sardine oil over her nose n mouth. If she was a dog Id rub peanut butter or honey. See if it sparks interest.

There is absolutely no place or need for putting both owners and animals through the nightmare of giving cats oral antibiotics. Makes me angry. There are excellent long acting broad spectrum antibiotics that can be given by injection (some that remain active for up to two weeks). This, NSAID's and confinement in a small space. The loss of appetite is not significant (with the proviso that infection is ruled out - and with the antibiotic it pretty well will be). Cats can survive for long periods on very little food as long as they have a good supply of clean water. and a regularly cleaned litter tray. In fact it is wholly to be expected; think on it - you are laid up in hospital or home with a busted leg in great pain. The last thing you want is to get stuck in to five courses with chocolate to finish. What is needed here is a small quantity of high quality food - say white chicken meat- cut finely. Maybe a bit of good quality cat food mashed up into a paste with a fork. But still, it could be weeks before the cats appetite returns to normal (and the antibiotics will depresss the appetite on their own). An injury of this nature is a long term process; all of the pinning and plating in the world will not rectify the trauma the tissue has been put through and this needs time and care to recover. Forget tumors and stuff - they are a white elephant.

TLC and time will do the trick - and harden yourself to the cat's confinement, because she will work on your heartstrings like a virtuoso violinist on a fiddle, but it is very important.

Av, your recuperating kitty is named Penny, right? If not, she's whom I'm referring to...

Is Penny agreeable to being carried outside and back in without struggling? If so, maybe she would enjoy something like this while she recuperates, since you can't build a catio.

Nah, it's Harley, Penny's sister. And not much news...recovery from the surgery is going well, but she still won't eat, so now they've got a feeding tube in and just hoping she starts eating on her own. :(

Do try rubbing her mouth with fish oil or her fave treat. Sometimes they need a little reminder of what stuff tastes like

Not to step on your vet's toes or anything, but have they tried cyproheptadine? You can get a compounded version that's a cream that gets rubbed on their ears so you don't need to worry about more pills/injections. Min is on it as an appetite stimulant because she's on chemo, and it seems to work. Ditto prednisolone, though that has more potential side effects.

Yeah, dunno the name but they said they had her on an appetite stimulant. (@Sky, tried that when she was home.) Apparently she's tolerating the feeding tube fairly well, and is picking up a bit of weight. Surgery recovery is very good. Am hoping that as she heals from that she will be more likely to eat, vet says nothing we can do really now except be patient.

I went through that with Min when she had her whole health ordeal, and she was okay, but it was nerve-wracking. I even went across town to the only pharmacy that compounded meds into cat-friendly flavored pills, and came home to find that they'd given me cherry-flavored Prednisone instead of fish. Min isn't a fan of cherry.

Haha, well at least there's a bright side if it's bringing you round. ;) Anyway, same same so far. No doubt they'll call me soon with an update, but right now it's just a waiting game.
