I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but my recollection is that it was because they owned the UMCP, which was responsible for enforcing law in human space, and which became responsible for the safety of humanity because piracy became a threat to that safety (as it was a betrayal of humanity to the Amnion).

It is more about how the UMC, formerly Space Mines Inc and Sagittarius Exploration, became the powerhouse that they were.

Actually, Stevie dropped a huge explicit hint in the dissection forum the same day as he posted the current question.

SRD's two-word explanation: "Economic Muscle."

I waited a week because I would not have come up with that without his dissection or actually going back through the book. Also was hesitant to commit to coming up with a question, but that's the breaks.

To somewhat cover the Gap until I come up with a worthy question, I'd like to do a brief poll of the "usual suspects", both regulars to the thread and lurkers. I was a bit surprised that this question persisted so long. Am I wrong that the Venn diagram of those frequenting this game and those who read Gap dissections would have a strong overlap? Out of the 30 reads of Stevie's dissection, nobody else was a Gap Quiz participant?

Me, I held back due to being a bit rule-bound, especially after having been nicked for a questionable use of outside information in a Win Wayfriend's Money game a few years ago...made worse that Menolly was both a fellow competitor in the game (disadvantaged by my use of the information) and the nominal source of the info.

Were y'all also hanging back because Stevie handed us the answer on a polished silver platter, or did the spoiler not catch anyone's notice?

Re being rule-bound: Cord Hurn is moderator of this forum, and he encouraged the use of outside information, questionable or not, so I abide by that rule

I would never be able to remember half the answers to questions in here if not for looking it up either in the dissections or the books. But since that requires effort in itself, I don't feel guilty about doing that.

As far as this last question - I used it as a bit of an experiment to see if people did in fact use the dissections for research.

Anyway, stop stalling SD - next question

Haha, yeah, I usually only answer the ones I know...it's very rare that I can be bothered to hunt for an answer. Asking questions however is much more difficult, so there I will usually either check out dissections, or grab a random book and pick something random.
