Well, I guess it depends on the device. The Mustang "guitar" that I have can be a midi device as well. The Squier (around $300+) is a real guitar that can be hooked up to an amp as well as the game. The keyboard can be used as midi, but I think the rest are pretty much for the game (although I guess some use for a USB microphone is possible). There is a certain type of drum used for Rock Band 3 (I think by Ion) that can be used for the game as well as electronic drums, but I've not researched it as I'd rather get a real kit than an expensive electronic version. But I probably won't get anything like that soon. However, the drums are a LOT of fun on Rock Band 3, and has good practice modes and I think a freeform mode that I've not experimented with (but I think I will next time I hook up the drums). I wish the guitar had the same option.

Ship it to me, I can fix just about anything on an electric guitar or bass.

Guitar lessons have taken a great new angle over the last few weeks. been learning to 'piano' - plucking 4 strings at once with thumb and first three fingers. Usually middle 4 strings but that depends on chord. In a 4/4 rhythm, piano on 1, slap strings on 2, piano on 3, slap strings on 4. With the occasional strum with nails on the 'and' between 3 and 4, and the occasional bass note on the 'and' between 4 and 1.

Started off with nice easy open chords like Cmaj7 to Am7 and back again, then got used to moving to top four strings for Dm7 (with Cmaj7).

Now doing same but with barre chords, current lesson is Cmaj7 to C#dim to Dm7 to G7 to G7add13 (all 5 barred) and back round. i laughed in disbelief when teacher showed me what he wanted me to learn first time, but I'm picking it up ok.

I have a pleasant ache in my left hand and wrist, and on about the 5th time round I start getting dud notes as my barre loses strength.

But all's well in guitar-lesson-world :D

Glad you're on your way. I learned to play in the 70's and still do actively. Not something you will ever regret doing!!

Here's my progress.

100% self-taught. My dad bought me a guitar for my 18th birthday; I still play it. I learned the Rain Song, and for whatever reason hit a road block after. Life gets in the way, but I'm playing it more regularly now.

This be she. I don't have a name for her. She's pretty beat up with my 5 million moves and never once in 9 years have I bought her a case. But I love her.

Have recently finished reading through ZEN GUITAR, by Philip Toshio Sudo. This book is so recommended for beginners and advanced players alike.

This book has shown me a kinda freedom so that I can enjoy playing the guitar to make music, and not have to play music so as to enjoy the sound of the guitar. If you catch my drift.

ZEN GUITAR is really like magic!

Umm...did you do this yourself? I thought you were a beginner!
[not that it's really that complicated...but it's annoyed me that every time I alter guitar/bass action I have to fix the intonation, too...in some cases they've been really picky and taken forever].

No my teacher did it for me. He suspected, correctly, that as my guitar is a Yamaha it would have shims(?) under the bridge which makes lowering action easy. While he was at that I asked him to re-string.

Still learning, but making progress. Haven't kept up with uploading videos. I know way more songs now.

Played a couple of open mics. A regular at a local coffee shop now. Feels good to do something I love, even if I don't get paid for it.

Also got myself some picks. They closed down my local music shop, and the closest one is way too inconvenient to not plan a day around going to. :/

Also ALSO, I get a lot of "You should belt it out! etc etc", but my son's room is on the wall I sing to, and I really do record these videos at midnight. They are certainly not at my best. I just like the whole rough cut thing. Makes it easy to see how much I improve over the weeks.

A song that really works for is More than Words by Extreme. I also took that Extreme style and used it to rework Green Day's Time of your Life (Good Riddance). Mainly open chords, a few run downs.... might be worth a try for you...

Playing electric guitar I'm using a pistachio shell as a plectrum. I find it fits snugly with the tip of the index finger, (easier at first on the upstroke). And with practice gives surprisingly good results.

Anyone do this?
