Well, I guess it depends on the device. The Mustang "guitar" that I have can be a midi device as well. The Squier (around $300+) is a real guitar that can be hooked up to an amp as well as the game. The keyboard can be used as midi, but I think the rest are pretty much for the game (although I guess some use for a USB microphone is possible). There is a certain type of drum used for Rock Band 3 (I think by Ion) that can be used for the game as well as electronic drums, but I've not researched it as I'd rather get a real kit than an expensive electronic version. But I probably won't get anything like that soon. However, the drums are a LOT of fun on Rock Band 3, and has good practice modes and I think a freeform mode that I've not experimented with (but I think I will next time I hook up the drums). No my teacher did it for me. He suspected, correctly, that as my guitar is a Yamaha it would have shims(?) under the bridge which makes lowering action easy. [not that it's really that complicated...but it's annoyed me that every time I alter guitar/bass action I have to fix the intonation, too...in some cases they've been really picky and taken forever].
A song that really works for is More than Words by Extreme. I also took that Extreme style and used it to rework Green Day's Time of your Life (Good Riddance). Started off with nice easy open chords like Cmaj7 to Am7 and back again, then got used to moving to top four strings for Dm7 (with Cmaj7).
Now doing same but with barre chords, current lesson is Cmaj7 to C#dim to Dm7 to G7 to G7add13 (all 5 barred) and back round. i laughed in disbelief when teacher showed me what he wanted me to learn first time, but I'm picking it up ok.
I have a pleasant ache in my left hand and wrist, and on about the 5th time round I start getting dud notes as my barre loses strength.
