geez, wish I could remember all the witty things I said the FIRST time I did this...
I'm a Junior BA student in the creative writing program at FSU. I'm fascinated by SRD's work, and am interested in discussing them with other like-minded individuals.
I am wary of (overextended)teenfandom ala Shatner's infamous Trekkie Convention skit on Saturday Night Live, and, frankly, believe I've seen a bit of that here...
I'm as social as the next guy, but you'll no doubt quickly discover that is not my sole purpose in joining this forum. I am 39 and probably a bit judgemental and discriminatory (and I mean these in the kindliest way you can take them) about what constitutes an enjoyable (for me) level of intellectual discourse. I have an admittedly professional interest in how it is that SRD does what he does, and exactly what other people think what he does IS - not that I am above picking apart elements of SRD's worlds as if I had some confusion about where the fantasy ends and my life begins, but I am VERY self-aware when it may seem that I'm doing this AS IF I had that confusion.
I would be particularly interested, as a means of getting a ball rolling, to find (or start) threads about the roles of women in SRD's works, especially if I can expect contributions from female readers. Also, what is SRD's place in the "meta-discussion," his relation to other writers on the "Big Ideas," guilt and power being two that jump immediately to mind.
I consider myself in no means superior to anyone else; college isn't making me any "smarter," just quantifying my ability to jump through hoops - I'm just stating some (by no means all) interests pertaining to my joining this forum.
I also am a Julian May fan.
cheers!
