Another Humble Suggestion

Post by Infelice »

I considered adding this post to Avatar's suggestion but considering its regarding a totally different issue I thought it would be better to create a new thread.... the mods can merge it if they feel the need...

My suggestion is ..... how about having an Archive where locked threads can be placed for prosterity? And each moderator can have the ability to move threads from their forums to the Archive as they see fit.

I was looking at the Galley and doing a bit of Spring cleaning and theres a couple of locked threads there that are messing up the place. I dont want to delete them cos they are interesting reading (for those of us interested in food fights that is).

Is making an Archive too much hassle? :?

I think that's a brilliant idea. There are plenty of threads I've never seen, because I rarely, if ever, get off the first page.

An archive would allow us to save the best, and delete the remainder.

Consider your motion seconded.

Peace

But would there then have to be an archive for each forum? Would a single, communal archive be too messy? Hmmm...

I think it would be better just have one archive for all the locked threads.

Yeah, one per every thread would clutter things up way too much.

The question on everybody's lips, I'm sure, is would there be a place in the locked topic archive for the Pr0n Thread? Or shall it remain in topic limbo forever more?

It was deleted, not just hidden away somewhere. We can't get it back.

Hm yeah, it is an interesting idea. I don't believe that an archives would be difficult to make. Basically it'd just be a forum that you can move things to, but not post in. Let me think about it for a minute. The only downside I see is that all of the topics are already currently organized by topics. So people can skim through the topic listing to see old topics. The only reason I've seen a need for a Archive in other forums is in the case of pruning, when they periodically delete old topics. But since we don't do that here, I wonder if there's a major need...-jay

Something I wouldn't mind seeing is a downloadable text or HTML file listing all the topics in each forum. It's a bit of a drag going through the old topics one screen at a time when you want to restart a discussion that lapsed some time ago. (That, I'm sure, is part of the reason why there are so many new threads about the Haruchai, the Elohim, the Staff of Law, etc., etc.) Is it possible to program phpBB to generate such a file at regular intervals? If so, you could store it on the server and have a link to it from the main menu. (An HTML file would be ideal, because it could include direct links back to each thread.) I would find that just as useful as a proper archive, for whatever my opinion is worth.

Just an idea.

Well, if we're going to throw out ideas, why not have mini-google thing here where I could type "Elohim" in a box and all the topics on Elohim would come up. Also, I'd like tohave a customizeable page that would only have the stuff here I was interested in, and I'd never have to accidentally read any Runes spoilers, or Revan's post, or.....

The first could be done by giving the search function a radio button for keywords in title only. The second by tracking each user's most commonly viewed / posted topics. I think both options are php mods.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”
