Hey Claire!

You read it!

I'm glad you liked it (Weck up to thees!)! Spread the word...this novel deserves all the readers it can get.

And yes, Clooney purchased the rights to the movie option and Michael Mann is reported to be tabbed as the director!
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. I sent it to my boyfriend to read while he's in tech school in Texas. He's finally getting to the battle at the end which I assured him he'll love because of all the gore.

Has he been unimpressed with it up to that point? Although the battle is certainly the point of the plot, and is incredible in several ways, I loved the whole book!!!

He's very picky about his books, he hates "lord of the ring type books" and wanted something futurey. The fist book I recommended to him was Ender's Game which didn't thrill him. Digital Fortress by Dan Brown was a hit though because he loves computers. Even though Gates of Fire doesn't have that he's reading it because I loved it so much, and I told him about the Spartans coating themselves in the blood of their enemies.

As if I don't have enough trouble finding, and choosing between, the books that I want, now I have to add another to my list.

Having long been an admirer of the Spartans, I'll have to consider this required reading now, given all the praise. No idea when I'll find it, but when I do, you can bet I'll read it.

For those who are interested, David Gemmel gives an interesting look at the lives of Spartans in Lion of Macedon, his fictional account of the life of Parmenion, one of Alexander's generals, about whom nothing is known to history, save his existence.

Anyway, thanks for the recommendation.

Take it Easy ;)

I've read the sequel, Dark Prince. Good book.

Very good, but the sequel is more "fantastical" than Lion if you know what I mean.

Lion deals more with the actual "historical" facts about the Spartans.

Both brilliant in fact.

Chin up, Avatar, Gates is a fast 400-ish pages. Even with my very modest reading speed, I'd be able to read it in a day if I didn't have to go to work.

The length doesn't bother me at all. It's just finding and being able to afford it. No worries though, I think your enthusiasm has bumped it to near the top of my list.

I'm looking forward to it, and will let you know when I find it. :)

Aaw hell dAN, thanks for the offer. I really appreciate it. I'll try and find it myself though, if nothing else, it's not like I'm around the corner, and our mail service is nothing if not unrealiable.

I'll keep it in mind though, and let you know if I really can't find it anywhere.

Really appreciate the offer.

Take it easy man.

Gates is in my local mall's Waldenbooks. Maybe Baggar Vance made him popular enough to be stocked even in such a small store. But what's up in SA? Edge didn't seem too confident that he'd ever get Runes. Damn, that's blasphemy!!!! But I'd imagine it would be in a big store, if you have something like a Barnes & Noble or Borders around.
