You obviously never encountered the pr0n thread.

As for the KW Common Denominator, I suspect we are all slowly developing both carpal tunnel syndrome and myopia.

A. Because proper tea is theft.

Ef'n right.

Although I don't think I ever had to tell anyone to tone down their language. Except maybe once or twice.

I thought the common denominator was that we were all members of the Nom fan club.-jay

But that's what I am curious about. Since we are all readers of Donaldson's works, can we get offended if someone uses foul language when SRD uses it a bit in his books? I'm not condoning it, nor would I swear. Perhaps it is the context of its use that offends.

This did turn into something that was going on about nothing(if you know what I mean). Talking about things which were nothin to do with the topic. I did not see any bad words, but depends what is bad. The 'F' word and others should not be used(there evil, burn :evilfoul: )but words like Crap and ass are not that bad, are they? You here it on kids shows like The Simpsons.

What is his language, anyway? He seems to speak English in all the books.

Yes, it did - until I glared it into oblivion. This is a valid topic, and two pages of pointless crap was unnecessary.

I don't think the very mild language is going to offend anyone under 120 (I've got my eye on you, Foul :-x ;) ) but stronger language often gets a warning word from me, and always has. Primarily because this has always been a family-friendly site, regardless of SRD's use of profanity.

funny. you can now say fuck all you want. it's automatically blocked out. fuck fuck fuck fuck . fuck you. i don't give a fuck . fuck off. Only word I've found that is blocked so. Even more amusing, it still shows up as long as it doesn't stand alone. i.e. f***ing, motherf***er, f***s, nof***ing way, etc. all show up if I didn't self-edit. Personally, I think c*** would be the most objectionable word, as it has no use other than a derogatory reference to female genetalia. Same with tw**.

Which brings me to my main point. Alan, you specifically have used the word tw** in four threads. Maybe it's not a big deal in the UK, like bugger in the states. Dunno, but it's a big nono where I grew up. I can think of a few instances where Lord Mhoram and danlo have said s***. Nobody corrects them. It's always, or almost always, the newbies that get corrected, and it's only happened in the last six months or so. It's never really been a problem.

A bit long of a rant, sorry, but hey, I'm a sailor. This is a matter close to my heart. I just think that on a board with as mature members as we have and as much dark, heavily loaded subject matter we discuss in Donaldson's works, the least of our problems is a little bit of blue language.

Heck, not even the dreaded N word is blocked!

Wow. It's no more severe than saying "crap" in our quaint culture. I'll have to try and keep myself in check, since Americans comprise the bulk of the membership.

On the subject of s***, I don't generally edit it out of posts in my forum because I've had disputes over the seriousness of that word more than once in the past.

EDIT: That above paragraph may not have been entirely clear. I don't profane at all in my posts - I don't see the need (other than the above culture clash issue). I was talking about using mod power to censor the posts of others.

OK, back on topic I don't give a fuck about all this vulgarity stuff! ;)

I think we all came here looking for more information about TCTC /SRD, or for people to share and discuss the Chronicles and his other works with. We found that, but we also found a lively, intelligent community, with a lot of profound conversations going on for almost any interest we might have in addition to TCTC. I have found wonderful political, religious and philosophical debate here, recipies, games, silly stuff, Monty Python, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek, ........the list goes on and on. I think there is a thread here for almost every interest I have. (hmmm- think I'll start a medical chat/information thread- that's about the only thing I haven't found that I have an interest in.....). Anyway, I really think our common denominator is that each one of us is intelligent, and has a lot to contribute to the Watch community. I have never found a forum with such thoughtful conversation, respect and diversity. I am proud to be a member here.

Speaking of the word 'tw**', not so long ago I was planning to use it in a signature (a joke from a TV show) - I queried Jay about it first, but in the end decided it probably wasn't worth it. Anyway, about that word - the meaning tends to vary around here. Yes, we have the more vulgar definition, but I've known people to use it about being hit, getting drunk, etc, etc. Not really such a big deal people using it.

And Syl - no one finds the word 'bugger' offensive any more.

Pants. The common denominator is that we all wear pants.
