Sean Bean As TC
Some of you may not recognize the name - but he played Boromir in the Lord of the Rings movies.
He also played Richard Sharpe in the BBC series - Sharpe's Rifles, etc...
He seems the perfect actor for the part in my opinion. His accent might be a problem, but he could probably loose that with a little work.
Just my 2 cents.

Thank you Mr. Donaldson.

Sean Bean was superb as Boromir! He definitely helped make Fellowship the great movie it was in my mind.
But therein lies the problem. Do we really want actors from the LOTR movies appearing in a Covenant movie? That will just add fuel to accusations that the Chronicles are nothing but a rip-off of LOTR. They'll say, it isn't bad enough that Donaldson copied Tolkien, but now the Chronicles movie is copying Peter Jackson right down to the castmembers!
Thusly, I think the Covenant producers should stay far away from any actor who worked on LOTR. That's my 2 cents.

He's a great actor and I think could be made to look the part. The only doubt I have about Bean as TC is his voice. His vocal range only really covers a few degrees of gruff northener bar his somewhat strained BBC English in Equilibrium. I don't see him being able to pull of TC's slightly whiny-sounding (in my head at least) American accent.

I love Sean Bean, but I think he might be pushing the age limit by the time this movie gets made. I disagree about the "whiny-sounding voice" thing, though... did you see him in Ronin? He played whiny and chicken-$*!* so well I wanted to reach into the tv and slap him. He's got the emotional range to cover up for other perceived short-comings.
He doesn't usually do lead roles, either, though I can't say if this is through choice or casting. He seems to enjoy the bad-boy roles, and he does a great "tormented man," so there two more things in his favor... but overall I think he's too... I don't know... maybe strong is the right word. *shrug* He has too much inherent presence, or self-confidence, for the TC role, I think.

Not as such... Start a Sharpe thread in the Waymeet's Television or Flicks forum, whichever is appropriate... I'm sure you'll get some comments there.

My take on TC
I don't know if I view TC as a whiney or cowardly... More so reluctant and unwilling...
He's a beaten man - devastated by his disease and the cataclismic loss he has suffered because of it. His battle is to maintain the sanity and practiced routines that have allowed him to hold on to some small vestige of hope and humanity.
He resists the idea of violence in his dream - primarily in response (I think) to his fear of the violence he allowed to overcome him with Lena. Prior to that incident - he doesn't seem cowardly - but cautious - and afraid of heights. But then, again, who isn't afraid of falling hundreds of feet to their death? Actually - it wouldn't be the fall I would be afraid of - but that bone crushing halt at the end of the fall terrifies me.
I have seen the Sharpe series on DVD - and that is the series that gave me the idea of the versatility of Bean's ability to play different roles - especially that of the "reluctant hero."
As far as using the same actor's from LOTR in the TC story - I don't think there's any threat of detraction from the story by any such connection. Recent publishers obviously don't think there's any threat from the connection either - note - the ring featured on the cover and edge binding of new editions - it's more gold than white gold.
But I don't mind - it's a boon if it introduces more readers to Donaldson's works.
I never saw Covenant as a "young" man in the books. When I read him, I see him as a 34/35 y/o - not really in prime physical condition - because of his isolation and illness. The first paragraph describes him as gaunt. My mind sees him as I saw my grandfather during the last years of his struggle with emphysema. He walked with the same kind of mechanical hitch in his stride that comes such a harsh illness.
I innitially rejected the idea of actor's like Keanau Reeves - because I think he's too young... But the idea of someone - with some former strength - both pysical and of character - comes across in my image of TC. And actor who can carry off and convey that image would be best for the job.
We all get our own images of characters from the stories we read. My son and I were talking about our own impressions about this just last night - and it was amazing how different - and yet similar our impressions were.
It is interesting to ponder though.
I am glad to see all your opinions.

Hey! 34-35 is a young man, okay? Even 40 is a young man!

LOL
Sorry - I need to clarify that...
I don't seem him as a 20-something.
I'm only 40 - and some days feel old as dirt - some day I wonder where 16 went.
No intentional slight against those of us who are just reaching prime.
But reaching prime - with such a devastating illness...Things would be a great deal different than they are for those who have no such obstacles to overcome.
Have a nice night.

What about those guys who dance disco in the dole queue, hamako?
(Sorry!
Sheffield and the Full Monty are inseperable in my ignorant American mind!

Sean Bean is a terrific actor, and in Ronin he was certainly weasely and whiny enough. But I think he's too old. Covenant was only 30 at the start of the 1st Chrons, and while it would definitely be a good idea to get someone older to play TC at 30--he needs to look gaunt and ravaged, after all--I think SB is just a little too old. Besides, I think that while you could get away with the Lords being Brits, TC really needs to be an American. But preferably one that doesn't talk like a surfer who's been in the sun just a little too long, a lá Keanu.

Halfway down the stairs Is the stair where I sit. There isn't any other stair quite like it. I'm not at the bottom, I'm not at the top; So this is the stair where I always stop.
Hey, I've looked for work in that job centre, the one they used for the external shots anyway. I admit that Bean was pretty whiny in Ronin, but he was still whiny in a rather northern way which leads back to the point that I'm not sure he can do a convincing American accent.
I haven't seen the Sharpe tv shows for quite a while, although I remember liking them when I was younger. For want of a better description I'll say that they're 'a bit ITV drama'. I realise that this will probably be lost on nearly everyone here, but basically it means the show is a bit by the numbers and doesn't really try to challenge its audience.
