Well, I guess we could debate "cult" classic. I usually attribute that title to a movie that did not get noticed by the viewing public in the theatre, but has developed a strong following (perhaps through DVD or VHS). Of those mentioned already, i concur with:
Any Python movie, but especially Holy Grail!!!
Dark City
Erasurehead (really disturbing)
Strange Brew (
)
5th Element (but I think it did pretty good at the box office... just bought the new special edition of the DVD.. pretty good)
City of Lost Children (loved this one).
Blade Runner
A few more I can think of:
Brazil (the uncut version seen in Canada and Europe, not the US theatrical release)
Akira (although this did well at the box office too, I think)
Plan 9 form Outer Space (just too horrible not be liked)
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Hard Boiled (early John Woo)
2001 A Space Odyessy
This is SPinal Tap (".. but this one goes to 11")
The Warriors ("...come out to playyyyyeee!")

Great list Usivius. Buckaroo Banzai rocks! I'd say any of the old John Woo films (The Killer, Hardboiled, A Better Tomorrow) belong on the list, but the hospital shootout in Hardboiled is definately a fave.

that hospital scene is also a fave of mine, Cail. When I first saw it on VHS a number of years back, my friend and I just laughed because it reminded us of a game of Doom --- running from room to room, just blowing the heck out of anything and everything, getting on an elevator and going to a new level, and continueing the same mahem...

Bad Taste was either awfully wonderful or wonderfully awful. From the credits, it looked like six New Zealanders wrote, directed and played all the parts. An alien fast food chain has decided to use humans as food, and "The Boys," need to save humanity. Very funny.
Heavy Metal, an animated movie based on a comic book series, was really good, too, if you didn't mind that there wasn't really a plot. Just a number of short stories bound together by and evil floating green ball, with a Blue Oyster Cult, Sammy Hagar (or was it Van Halen?), et al soundtrack.
Reanimator, based on HP Lovecraft, had the funniest decapitated-head-oral-sex scene I've seen.

My favorite cult film is probably Army of Darkness. Can't get enough of Ash waving his boomstick around. God I wish there was an S-Mart in my neighborhood!
The only other cult classic I can come up with that hasn't been mentioned is The Day the Earth Stood Still. Awesome old school sci-fi.

There's an old film from the 80s called The Dark Backward starring Bill Paxton and Judd Nelson about a really bad comedian who grows a 3rd arm out of the center of his back. Really, really strange movie.

No way! The Hitcher is one of my favorite movies. Excellent suspense, really frightening, and you'll never look at french fries the same.

But, Caroline Munro as Stella Star was one of the Hottest Babes in the Universe, and that was all that mattered!
