Riddles in the Dark

- Professor Henry Jones Jr.

"Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet."

Out-witting Smaug.

I thought Smaug was a weird character to put in there.

Riddles in the Dark and when they are riding the barrels ( iforget the chapter name - barrels out of bond?)
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

"Riddles" was very creepy!
Spoiler
I didn't have any familiarity with the story at all, so I was surprised to see Gollum return later in LOTR.
And of course, the Smaug and Biblo confrontation. Classic meeting of two great minds! ;)

I quite liked the Dwarves little song taunting Bilbo as they cleaned up his kitchen.

I thought that was one of the best scenes in the book, just because their conversational styles were so very different, yet meshed so well together. Tom Shippey thinks the same. He spends a fairish chunk of text on it in J.R.R. Tolkien: Author of the Century.

Riddles in the Dark is my favorite. I like Gollum a lot... he makes me laugh. My friend and I read that chapter together and just had fun with his speech. It's awesome.

I like the troll scene a whole lot, too, along with Beorn and Bard.

It's funny Riddles is the least interesting chapter to me.
I'm not a big Gollum fan I guess.

I love "Flies and Spiders"
Bilbo really comes into his own in that chapter.

Old fat spider spinning in a tree!
Old fat spider can't see me!
Attercop! Attercop!
Won't you stop,
Stop your spinning and look for me!

Old Tomnoddy, all big body,
Old Tomnoddy can't spy me!
Attercop! Attercop!
Down you drop!
You'll never catch me up your tree!

I liked "riddles", and "Spiders", and the battle of the five armies as well, especially when the Dwarves of the Iron Hills arrive.

Aah, a great book, and one I've read many, many times.
