Should I get the DVDs?
Its been ages since I've seen Star Wars, and I always enjoyed them. Aside from Greedo shooting first, the changes in the 1997 Special Edition didn't really spoil the experience for me. How many more changes have the DVDs had, since the 97 Special Edition? In all honesty, I'd just love to have the original cuts (or at least the option to have them with the "special edition"), but, hey, George Lucas has to feed his megalomania, right?
Personally, I'm leaning toward getting them. I look at this way: I've heard it looks and sounds better than ever, and I have a 60 inch big screen with surround sound.

Well, Han shooting first made Han look like more of a scoundrel. It was a very strong characterization point. What's the point if Greedo does it? To clue the viewers in about Jabba?dlbpharmd wrote:I don't get it - what's the big deal with Greedo shooting first?
Spoiler
Plus, like I said in the poll, it'd be like Sollozzo shooting first during Mike's pivotal scene in the Godfather.

I thought all the hoopla about the changes was pretty dumb. Luca$ has diddled with some things to try to tie the first three films into the mess he's made out of the second set of three. Is it a travesty? Hell yes, but their Luca$'s films, not ours, so he can do what he likes.
The sound and picture quality justify the purchase of the set. I've got a 61" TV with a really good surround system (Sony ES/Adcom/Klipsch), and the films are thunderous. Other than that, the set is a bit of an embarassment. The packaging is worse than the LD set from 10 years ago. There's nowhere near the amount of supplimental material I'd expected. And it's a bummer you can't see the original films.
Buy it for the sound and the cleaned-up picture.

Yes, you should get the DVDs, Lord Foul. Like Cail says, the sound and picture quality justify having the set.
By the way, Greedo doesn't shoot first anymore in the DVD version. He and Han Solo shoot simultaneously now.
And Cail: you've got Klipsch speakers?
I've got their ProMedia 2.1 system for my computer, and they're awesome, putting it mildly. A home theatre Klipsch system is beyond my reach, but WOW, it must sound very sweet indeed.

Bah. Well, better than the 97 edition, but, damn it Lucas, I'd forgive you of all the changes if you'd just left THAT untouched, but NO.Matrixman wrote:By the way, Greedo doesn't shoot first anymore in the DVD version. He and Han Solo shoot simultaneously now.

Sorry, I still don't get it. Han's a scoundrel? He's trying to save his hide! Greedo was an alien, and I'd expect his reflexes to be faster (but his aim shouldn't suffer, so I guess I do have a problem that he missed - but then Han would be dead, and we'd be short a hero.)Lord Foul wrote:Well, Han shooting first made Han look like more of a scoundrel. The only problem I have with the DVDs is that Hayden Christiensen appears along with Yoda and Obi-wan at the end of ROTJ. My favorite new scene is the expanded conversation between Vader and Palpatine in TESB. I think Palpatine has become my favorite character, would like to learn more about him.[/quote]

Oh, bugger. I wasn't even thinking about that. I just automatically thought that you all were talking about the ones with just the added digital stuff in various spots, not "edited to fit"dlbpharmd wrote:The only problem I have with the DVDs is that Hayden Christiensen appears along with Yoda and Obi-wan at the end of ROTJ. You know, if Lucas found out his dad wasn't really his real dad, he'd go through all his family photos and replace the images of his old dad, and cgi his real dad into home movies. I wonder if when he finds out he said something incorrect or contradictory in the past if he then goes and changes all the memories of people he spoke to? Or he realises that he was born ten years earlier, does he then add footage of himself in old movies?
