Bump! If there's more interest, I'll invest some more time into this! Only one actual person tested this and that's not too encouraging

I wish you success with your game, CW, but... unfortunately I don't have Neverwinter Nights, and I really don't want to buy a game for which I have no interest just to play a mod for it, even if it is a TC mod.

Call me a stubborn bastard, but right from the beginning the only kind of TC game that fires my imagination is a first-person type game.

My thoughts

Post by Charles Timewaster »

I downloaded it a while back but never posted my thoughts...

I really liked the opening scene...especially the "teenage Linden" character; I loved the contrast between her personality there and in the books.

The middle part seemed slow, since there wasn't much interaction and I already knew everything that was going to happen.

The last part didn't work for me, and I think the problem was that you were trying too hard to do a direct adaptation of the books, and that doesn't work well in an interactive game.

Basically, the novel is: "This is the story of a man named Thomas Covenant, and of the decisions that he made."

But a game can only be: "This is the story of you, the player, and of the decisions that will be imposed on you whether you agree with them or not." That works when you're imposing the easy, obvious, decisions. ("Well, of course I want to kill the dragon and rescue the princess!") But it breaks when you're forcing the player to do something he doesn't want to. ("Why am I just standing around and watching the dragon eat the Princess?")

I think a better way to do it would be to tell a brand-new story based off of the books. Maybe Lord Foul decided that Covenant was too unreliable, and he got Drool to summon a second messenger. The player could re-trace Covenant's steps a week behind him and deal with the aftermath. Or you could kill off Covenant and the player could be summoned to take his place. (You could do a parody where Covenant broke his neck falling off of Kevin's Watch, or a serious story where Atiaran couldn't stop Triock from killing him.)

The key is that the player needs to feel like he's making the decisions he wants to make...for example, if he finds himself watching wolves attack Mithil Stonedown, he needs to be able to try to unlock the power of the white gold. You don't have to let him succeed, but he needs to have the option of trying, and the villagers need to acknowledge that he made the attempt.

Anyway, good luck with it! Like I said, I did like the opening sequence, and the technical details like scripting and map design were good as well.

I have NWN all expansion packs but I am unable to play them on my computer because one of the files is corrupted. Can I play this with just the first one?

This concept is so cool that my brain just broke. I'm a huge, HUGE game-geek, and the thought of a playable Thomas Covenant Chronicles game makes me giddy like a schoolgirl.

To Charles:

Dude, this is just the tip of the iceberg! WHat I am doing is setting up the meat of the mod which will be a LOT more decision-making for the PC. As far as your theme idea, there is no way I'm going to revamp the whole game for that preference! I am trying to balance scenes that are directly from the book but also with new elements in there as well to make even a seasoned TC reader interested and surprised (like the cutscene with Lena in Mithil Stonedown). All the cutscenes right now are like the prolouge to an SRD book. It's needed for people who may not be familiar with TC and need to understand the storyline. Anyway, the next part I was going to script would have a lot more action and small puzzles, as well as introducing more characters from the book.

To caamora:

You need to have all expansions working to play my mod. Your game version must also be updated to version 1.65 which is done on the Update button on the game. Read previous threads to get more info. Also the readme file I included explains a lot!

BTW, right now, NWN Platinum, which has both expansions, sells for 40 bux!

Damn, unfourtionatly I have dial-up, so downloading this is going to be a pain in the arse. I take it this is a single player adventure? I have been playing NWN every since it came out. I have seen 1 mod on-line of TC, it was called "The Illearth War". Wish I had seen yours while you had it up and running. If, and when I ever get your mod downloaded, and it is up to standard, I know many people that play NWN, and can get some people to check it out. As I said, I'm on dial-up at the moment, so hosting it myself would be a problem. But I can find someone else with a good comp, and IC to do so. That is with your permission. Ideally you hosting your own would be even better :) Looking forward to checking out your mod!

Hey! Great idea, and your webserver must be alright, cause I was getting a good 500kb/s download speed, so even you 56kers out there might have a good chance of getting this downloaded!

Now, about the game...

The cutscene between Lord Foul and Drool was brilliant! I'm sure Bioware would have been proud of a cutscene like that!

I also had some minor bugs, but they have already been mentioned in previous posts, so I won't beat them to death here.

I was wondering when more of the game will be released, and if you are still working on it?

I sure hope you are and I look forward to the next installment!

I'm afraid that Caerroil Wildfish isn't about very often as far as I know, but good luck anyway. :)

I am here, but I am currently very busy with two more projects at present. My fantasy football league website and another game I am designing called Sorceror Knights. It's an online card game that combines elements of D&D, Magic the Gathering, and Risk. If anyone is inerested in it, send me a post here (I may create a Covenant edition of cards). It's still under development but I may have something playable by the end of the month. As far as the module, I do plan to get back to it but not for a few months. Only now have I received comments about it and greatly appreciate it. If more people enjoy it and ask me nicely, I may divert some energy toward it earlier ;)

Sorry, I've never really been one for the D&D style card games (I don't think I'm smart enough to keep track of all those numbers! ) I hope your development of the game goes well, and fast so that you can get back to the development of the TCTC mod! :D

I would like to see this to. I have made several mods for NWN and would love to see what you have done!

I've still got the copy I downloaded...I've lost the readme but kept the rest of the files. They're 121MB zipped, which is too much for my website. Can anyone out there host them for me? If not, I'll set up a torrent in a couple of days.

I am seriously tempted to use the Oblivion editer to make the Land - as it can handle massive draw distances and mountains. Oh, and the forests!
