Beast's real mark devalued to '616'

Post by [Syl] »

Satanists, apocalypse watchers and heavy metal guitarists may have to adjust their demonic numerology after a recently deciphered ancient biblical text revealed that 666 is not the fabled Number of the Beast after all.

A fragment from the oldest surviving copy of the New Testament, dating to the Third century, gives the more mundane 616 as the mark of the Antichrist.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

But the Bible is a divinely inspired document - all of the writers, editors, and translators over the years have been acting as God's Wordprocessors. How could they have gotten this one wrong?

Darn science.

Look, be fair. God's very busy most of the time, you know. It's not like anyone ever claimed God was infallible or anything, is it ?

The thing that I was wondering, which the article didn't address, was the part where it says, "and that number is three times 200, threescore, and six." Now was that just a fancy way for the translators to say 666, like with the "thou shalt"s and "sayeth"s?

I always thought 666 sounded a bit boring anyway, it's much more interesting with something a bit different in the middle to break up the monotony.

I always wondered why it was 3 sixes and not 6 sixes anyway. If six was meant to represent ultimate imperfection then wouldn't six of them represent it even better?
If you change the font to white within spoiler tags does it break them?
Yes. But that's why I don't read the King James regularly ;)

I know! And it's not like you can do anything with the matching one on your hand, either!

LOL, Iryssa.

In God's so infallible, then what is the aesthetic or indeed practical justification for the design of the human reproductive system ?

Could it be that God just has a nasty sense of humour ?

Oh My Goodness...

...Oh My!..Just last year I believe, a highway,,well, a road, one lane in each direction blacktop,,that begins in New Mexico , bends into eastern Arizona and heads northerly,,of which a good portion is some of the most fatiguing switchbacks I've ever had the pleasure of driving thru,,and also takes one thru the beautiful white mountains area mind you, known then and officially designated Route 666,,was officially changed to some other numerical nomenclature. The Govenor of New Mexico said it had nothing to do with Satanism,,but the good righteous church goers along the hell bound highway, in interviews , all where glad to see the change of the devils highway. Apparently the dangerous curves with hundreds of feet of drop off had little responsibility to the many vehicle deaths that occured on the treatcherous trail...And now, All for Naught!...

So, to all the State Highway's out there designated 616,,be ready for the political onslaught,, the Tax dollars spent on religious superstition,,you will be changed...........MEL

Well, I doubt anyone can argue with that ;)

Yeah, Mel, I can totally relate. I hate it when people get so superstitious about that kind of thing...those are the kinds of people Bible College students crack jokes about. Well, not usually about the people, actually...just random sarcasm about the number. (It's actually quite funny, but you really gotta be there)

My Drivers Licence number has 666 right in the middle.

Guess it's not as funny, now.

It's terrible. The government is going to have to redo all those barcodes on the backs of our necks.

I wonder if this means my copy of "The Omen" will become a collector's item once they re-release it with the 666 on Damien's scalp changed to 616?

Was she driving a minivan?! My Bible College friends and I had this thing going for a while...we were "convinced" (insert joking tone) that the Anti-Christ drives a minivan. We were driving around the city one day and honestly saw at least half a dozen minivans with "___- 666" on their plates (it's not that big of a city...and the fact that they were all minivans...)
...of course, the way some of them drove, you really had to wonder... ;)

Does this mean the barcode conspiracy theory was all for nothing ? I can now go shopping without satanic overtones ?

Wow, that's a weight off my mind.
