I think either animated or live action would work. Animated would allow for better visualization IMO not so much CGI work which is woefully expensive.
Besides shouldn't we all be worried more about the STORY being told correctly rather than HOW the story is told. Joy is in the ears that hear or in our case with this thread... the eyes that see.
Having a live action Foamfollower shouldn't be a problem. Look how they handled size differences in LOTR's and the hobbits compared to Men-folk and Elves and Orcs? Same way only just have the Giant tower over everyone else.
Ramen who are smaller could concievably be played by talented but mature teenagers (oxymoron I know).
Ranyhyn... there are draft horses (Clysdales, Belgians, Shires (boy what a pun that makes huh?) and the like) that would suit very well. The Stars could easily be make-upped on. www.imh.org/imh/draft/dr3.html click on individual breeds to get an idea of their sizes now picture them without harnesses and running free and having Bloodguard riding on them? Gotta be live action. You'll never get the mass appeal necessary with a cartoon.
Unless it's The Simpsons.

LOL, I don't think you need to much experience to know that a horse would squirt a lot of blood if it got stepped on by a mumak. Instead, they all just sorta deflated.
As for live-action Ranyhyn... a Clydesdale, Shire or Percheron crossed with a large Thoroughbred or some big warmblood would make a perfect Ranyhyn: big and muscular but still possesed of the sleek lines you expect from one of the great horses.
If anyone remembers Krull, they had a wild horse sequence in that with a herd of Clydesdales. The horses were all too thin because of stress during shipping, but otherwise they carried off the "mystic horse" air very well.

Actually, I don't think the size was handled well at all. In most of the scenes the hobbits are slightly taller than a mans waist but in the battle scene in Rohan where they escape, they barely rise past the horses' knees. Big difference or big horses.Seafoam Understone wrote:Having a live action Foamfollower shouldn't be a problem. and as for Anime, I have never been able to take it seriously. Sorry Alynna, but in my opinion relism comes before the dramatic skills of anime artists. I just can't picture an anime COTC without laughing. A story like this should be taken seriously.
if those with power are guilty, is it possible to be guilty yet powerless?

I don't know about you, but I've seen many serious Animes. Very serious. The people who draw and develop the stories for these Animes are amazing. Not all Anime is Pokemon and Dragonball Z... Heh. But trust me, a Covenant Anime done right would be very serious.Lord Defile wrote:A story like this should be taken seriously.

Perhaps. but i have yet to see an anime that is not overly dramatic. I'm sorry but no anime show i've seen has made it though without screen shots or certain dialogue that, when attempted to be taken seriously, always brings a smile to my face. And even if its done well, the art is not realistic enough (for me) to give it the necessary... emotional character attatchment (for lack of a better phrase). Try picturing an anime Foamfollower laughing in foul's Creche and take it seriously

I voted live action. When it comes right down to it, I want to see a live action TC movie. Even if a good anime movie was made, I doubt it would diminish my desire for a live action film. In fact, it would probably amplify it.
I haven't watched a lot of anime, but enough to be aware that it can be serious and seriously amazing. I thought the work done on The Animatrix was breathtaking, for instance (and the film was far more interesting than the Matrix sequels, for that matter).
But I think the Chronicles needs live, in-the-flesh people. It demands that level of verisimilitude in my mind. There is no way around it, the way I see it.

I'm not so sure. many a movie has been ruined because an actor could not convey the emotion/expression of the role well enough and assuming we get unknowns to play the parts to help make it seem more real than if famous people were used, they very likely don't have much experience. Animation on the other hand, if done right, can be made to be very expresive if done right. it can also look very muck like live action. also, because they don't appear in the movie, the animators can be as prestigious as you want. and since you wouldn't have to pay full actors wages, you would be able to hire very good animators.

The brilliant, startlingly beautiful, experimental technique that Ralph Bakshi used for LOTR would be absolutely perfect for TC.
Live action, overlayed with painted animation... what could possibly be better than that?
