War of the Worlds
Okay, the release is in 5 days. I am getting super excited. Anyone with me? I have just seen images of the war machines, and they look spectacular!
Shame Tom Cruise is in it, though.

I'm in the unenviable position of already knowing the story. This means I'll be waiting for things to happen, complaining when they don't whining when things happen that shouldn't and so on.
Oh well, I'm still looking forward to it.

I LOVE the story. But a post of Variol Farseer's a while back made me think again about movie adaptations. I heard Spielberg is handling the movie the same way Wells handled his theme - that is (and excuse the lecture) a look at how powerful nations deal with less-developed nations, and how powerful nations become complacent. So it makes sense there are some deviations from Well's story (though I have read the movie is quite accurate) as the underlying theme may be there. My only gripe isNathan wrote:I'm in the unenviable position of already knowing the story. Spoiler
that the aliens look different from the book, they don't come from Mars, and the way they 'arrive' on Earth

Good points, all... but on the other hand: it's really a pity about the whole Tom Cruise thing.

I'm glad to hear that Loremaster, I was worried by what I saw in the trailers, but if it has your vote of confidence I'm sure I can weather whatever small changes there are.
However, Edge raises a good point. Perhaps the film would be better if it didn't have Tom Cruise in it?

Thought he was very good in "Collateral". Can't wait for the movie. Opening night I'm there!!!
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. I heard that the movie "loosely" follows Wells' version of the story.
But that is just hearsay.
I hope it won't be a dissappointment, like "I, Robot"
(Which "loosely" followed the original version.)
