That may be a bit specific, although I know SRD has been influenced by Wagner. It's more like Egoyan builds pressure throughout his films to an ultimate climax where you know something's gonna happen but you don't know what, and then when it hits it's not quite what you'd expected but DAMN!! it's powerfull.

How about Ang Lee as director? Famous for Couching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, he is a humane director who i think would deal with the weighty issues of TC very well.

One query, will Linden Avery even be in this movie? I'd have thought that the span of the novels is to great to inclue her, a she only appears in the second chronicles. I would hope that the movie(s) would deal with the First Chronicles first. Maybe the second could be done as a sequel later.

I don't think she will be, since the first film is, I think, pretty definitely going to be LFB.

It's a bit of a shame, because the Second Chronicles lend themselves to a film much better. You've got the female co-protagonist, it's probably a bit easier to do in terms of scale, and it'd be harder to put them down as "too much like LOTR".


I wonder if it would work at all, doing those first and then the First Chronicles as a Star Wars-style prequel.
Or would you have to have knowledge of the First Chronicles to apprecaite the Second?

It might work, perhaps, but (and i can only speak for myself here), I found the first chronicles to be the superior story.

One of the reasons that I persevered with second was because, having read the first, I understood the travesty that the Sunbane (and the shockingly base behaviour of a once noble people) repesented, and wanted to see that rectified so that the old Land, which i knew and loved, could be restored.

If the Second Chronicles were made first, the unfamiliar viewer would not know how the Land used to be, and so would not appreciate the horror of the Sunbane.

I would much rather see the First Chronicles put to film.

Personally, I prefer the First Chronicles too. But that's not to say that I didn't also adore the Second. I was just wondering if it might be more palatable for a studio.

It might be, but for it to make sense would require either (probably mutilated) prologue, a bunch of intro-text ala Star Wars, or so much alteration to the original premise that anybody who'd read it would be horrified. (Us purists anyway. )

John McTiernan!
McTiernan just doesn't get enough credit. The guy has a knack for making the actors believable in their roles. In movies like Die Hard, Predator, and The 13th Warrior, the tough guys were believably tough instead of looking like Hollywood yuppies acting tough, a must for whoever portrays the Haruchai, in my humble opinion. McTiernan has had the financial failure of Last Action Hero haunt him for a decade, even though it wasn't his fault that Jurassic Park came out at the same time. Make no mistake, he'd be able to bring the Chronicles to life at least as well, if not better than anyone else alive.

I'll go with this one! the 13th Warrior was great, how ever in the book eaters of the dead, they weren't tribal humans. I suppose he did the change so it would be more appealing to the masses.

Peter Weir.
... a consumate director, his impressive list of directing credits are a pretty damn good lead-up to a task as vast and complex as TCOTC - now, some of these movies aren't among my very faves, but the guy could do a great job based on the accumulative themes, both psychological and visual, explored throughout his films :

Picnic at Hanging Rock - a haunting, beautiful film; the scenes at Picnic Rock were shot on location and are thoroughly eerie and majestic - simple rocks and boulders are rendered foreboding and ancient through Weir's clever techniques, imo the guy would have the ability to capture the essence of the Land.

Mosquito Coast - by no means a classic (decent film though), but watching Harrison Ford's obsessive anti-hero inventor character drag his poor family through swamps to pursue his passions shows Weir could definitely handle focusing on a main character who's a bastard - some of those scenes would make good locations for Sarangrave Flat too ..

the Truman Show - entertaining film with some interesting themes as Jim Carrey's Truman explores the nature of reality and free will

Fearless - more psychological exploration as a man's perspective on life changes after a near-death experience

Master and Commander - visually stunning; CGI in some Giants and a couple of scenes coulda been the Search

the more I think about it, the more I reckon Peter Weir would be the ideal man for TCOTC, earlier films like the Year of Living Dangerously and Gallipolli were large-scale, gritty pieces - surely we can forgive the guy Green Card !?!

I completely agree, SleeplessOne. When I saw that film, it was as if I was looking at something out of The One Tree. Even the subtitle of the movie is suggestive: "The Far Side of the World" -- Bhrathairealm!

Sleepless One is right. Weir would be near perfect...and if he were on-board, maybe he'd convince Crowe to do it with him.
