Didn't I say that? I will say it again. I believe it is impossible to watch an episode or two of House and NOT coming away feeling like he is TC. Gotta be him. And I say at 46, he's not too old.

I have watched House and I love the show, I think this guy is really good but I am having a hard time picturing TC. There has always been a part of me that thinks that TC is not hard as nails. He just uses that to protect himself. Underneath, he feels too deeply.

I don't get that same sense from House.

And, he is too old looking. 46 is not too old but House just looks to old and weathered.

I wanted to know what all this Hugh Lurrie stuff was all about, so I watched the show a couple of times...now I'm hooked!!!

I heard a review for the show the other day, they actually called him the Anti-Hero

I think he'd be an excelent pick for TC too.

A lot of people keep forgetting how the ravages of illness ages the face and body. I don't see TC looking like your normal 30 y/o at any time in the chronicles.

In my minds, his face is also etched with the lines of disassappointed bitterness.

Ever seen a 30 y/o drunk or drug addict? They can look pretty rough too.
Someone who's got all the anger and bitterness and illness that TC has could easily look ten years older than their biological age.

As far a I'm concerned, the actor can be an american, a brit, or a canadian for all I care, so long as they can play the part and assume the accent believably.

BTW: what kind of accent do you all think TC has? Me, I think of a fairly neutral midwest type of accent - not too southern, not really northern either. He's an educated man and a writer - and I always think they tend to lean towards proper enunciation no matter where they are from.

would have to agree NOW with HL.
I didnt a first cause of his British roles but since this threat started ive looked out for House and he's awesome in it and perfect for TC.
p.s I now go to great lenghts to download the US series 2 cause the UK's still on series 1 but damm i wish the US wouldnt have sooooooo many breaks.... i need my House fix EVERY week not every couple!!!

Due to a string of repeats of The Commander in Chief, I've finally been allowed ( ) to watch an episode of House for myself.

I think that everyone who thinks House is a spot-on Covenant is mistaken. I can see what some might call a resemblance, but to me, there's no way.

Sure House is sarcastic. But he goes out of his way to snipe at people; he enjoys being annoying; he is mischievous. With Covenant, the sarcasm is only occasional, and used defensively. And House isn't even grouchy! He seems to placidly absorb whatever anyone says to him.

I think the show is good, and I'll probably watch it again. But I know Covenant; Covenant is a friend of mine. House, sir, is no Covenant.

Having finally watched some House, I agree with you. There is some resemblance, but Covenant's legendary belligerence is much more vulnerable than that of House. Covenant is awash with weakness where House is not. I'm not saying Hugh Laurie couldn't be Covenant; I'm just saying I'd still prefer Christian Bale.

My 2c...I think HL is a brilliant actor, an outstanding comedian and that is all he would need to assume the part! Just because he's British doesn't mean he can't play the role...that being said he is 46, and that is 16 years older than TC was when he was first transported to The Land which might pose some problems, especially for sequels. Also though, the ageing side of leprosy would mean that he would look older than he is, and he would have a furrow in his brow and a few lines from all the worry he incurs himself regarding his revulsion towards society, and indeed, himself.

I think Christian Bale is a good actor, but I don't see him being any TC. In all honesty, I can't think of anyone off the top of my head that I could envision as TC other that HL...but he is too old for the part for sequels, in 4 years he'll be 50...the movie might start being made in 2-4 years, so by the end of the production process he'll be what, 50 something? No hope for sequels there, and I couldn't imagine if they got another actor for TC half way through.

*Sigh* I must admit though, Adrian Brody is a nice idea...he has the same skinny build, is a bit tall and looks rather gaunt...not to mention he is a brilliant actor, if you've seen the pianist you'd know what I mean! But maybe an unknown, a little seen actor would be good for this.

a good actor is flexible. The role called for as sniping, sarcastic, jerk who, in the end, is sort of likeable. it's not House who you'd want to be TC, it's Laurie.

I agree with Matthias. Is is Laurie I was looking at, not House. House is too cold a character, though I think he does have some feelings, he doesn't care about people. TC does deeply, and I think Laurie can pull that off. I agree he is too old for a long series, but MAN! what a TC he could make today!

House definitely isn't Covenant. He's an excellent doctor (read Hero) and very confident in himself - in an episode I watched the other day, he told them to medicate a patient on the basis of a guess. When questioned, he replied "That's why it's gonna be so cool when I'm right"...
A sharp contrast to Covenant's constant flight from responsibility.

However, I agree that there is definitely *something* in the way Laurie portrays House that convinces me he's the right man for the job - which I would never have said about him from only watching his previous Blackadder / Fry&Laurie work.

As another idea, what about the bloke who plays the Unbeliever on Fantasy Bedtime Hour? There are episodes of that (when he's playing it straight and not hamming it up too much) where he does a really good job... Maybe not as much of a physical match as Laurie, but still...

Welcome indeed. I'm afraid that Laurie is indelibly associated with BlackAdder in my mind, and probably always will be. Saw a pic of him in another thread, and I just can't see him in a serious light.

(Never seen him in anything else though, I'm the first to admit, but...)
