Well, I finished A Game of Thrones today, and plan on making a trip to the mall <hopefully> Sunday to get books 2 & 3. I plan on starting A Clash of Kings on Monday. The Barnes and Nobles down here still hasn't opened since Katrina, but our 2 main malls finally opened up last weekend.

I would order on line, but shipping down here around New Orleans still is not exactly a guaranteed option. Over nine weeks since we were hit, and we still have so far to go to one day eventually get back to where we once were.

Finished "Road to Dune". Interesting stuff. The early draft makes a good read, if you can shake loose your memory of the final edition. Deleted scenes and chapters were cool as well.

Hi guys!

The second volume of The Corean Chronicles more than lives up to the expectations generated by its predecessor. Indeed, Darknesses is yet another strong offering by L. E. Modesitt, jr.

I love how everything which appears to be simple at face value turns out to be multilayered. Once more, that characterizations are of the first order, imbued with that human touch I alluded to in my previous book review. The worldbuilding is also quite interesting. The author refrained from revealing much about his new universe in Legacies. But Darknesses reveals many secrets, showing just how much depth this new series possesses.

And the fact that characters must always pay a heavy price for every achievement imbues the numerous storylines with more credibility than is currently the norm in the market. Which makes L. E. Modesitt, jr.'s novels so different -- and so special!

I'm slowly plodding through Memory Sorrow and Thorn, half way through book 1, The Dragonbone Chair. Its ok so far, but I feel like I would've got more out of the story if I'd read it when I was 15 instead of the 29 that I am.

Making slow progress on Viriconium (That book still? Can't be... Yup.) Finished 'The Dancer from the Dance', should read all of 'The Luck in the Head' tonight (I'm being pathetically lazy and taking a second day off from NaNo, having only written another 300 words).

I never actually finished Viriconium. It didn't seem to be going anywhere interesting, so I pretty much abandoned it.

I'm currently reading Hunting Wolf and Albion, both by John Grant, and Dracula.

I think I can see what you mean - the longer stories go on too long, and the short ones are disconnected scenes that don't really have any particular purpose. I read something about Harrison recently that mentioned his habit of writing things which were entirely Middle, without a Beginning or End.

It's a shame, because I like his ideas and descriptive style. But it's telling that my favourite part of the book (up to the point I dropped it) was the very first story - a short and strange piece.

Finished "Cryptonomicon" last week, then finished the first book of Bakker's Prince of Nothing trilogy (The Darkness That Comes Before) over the weekend. Now I'm reading the second book, "The Warrior-Prophet".

It's an outstanding opening chapter, I agree, Lucimay. Throughout the series, concepts keep opening out like fireworks bursting. You never realize it's there until it opens in your face.

I bought "Gardens of the Moon" a while back (thanks to the constant buzz about Erikson on KW and another board I frequent), but just haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Although, that may not be totally a bad thing, seeing as how the US is lagging behind the UK in getting the Malazan books (As I recall, my local libraries have only recently gotten "Deadhouse Gates"). ;)

Bakker is very good so far. I had trouble getting into "The Darkness That Comes Before" when I tried it a while back, but when I gave it another try over the weekend, I really enjoyed it. "The Warrior-Prophet" hasn't disappointed either as of yet (I'm about a third of the way through). Nice to see that epic fantasy can still produce work on the level of Song of Ice and Fire, among others.

haven't read it. stumbled on bakker which led me to the Three Seas forum which turned me on to Erikson. diggin Erikson so much i'm on my way back through them all while waiting for US publication of The Bonehunters. (arg) have stopped between GotM and Deadhouse Gates to read the first Gap book which a couple of friends here instisted i must read!
i liked bakker alot but i have to say i LOVE Erickson. also just bought the novella Blood Follows, a lovely little first edition with a gorgeous dust cover! i understand it's about a couple of characters that appear in one of the novels, i can't remember which. i'm saving it for when i get to the end of Midnight Tides again and am jonesin for Bonehunters.
