I'm with you there, Plissken.

sgt, in your link (about 4 paragraphs down) a paragraph starts with:
That the Church is infallible in her definitions on faith and morals is itself a Catholic dogma
"We say we are, so we are." Agenda, indeed.

:LOLS: I think Spring has found out that there's no such thing as a "quick" religous question in the Close. :D (I love this place.)

FWIW, I agree with Cybrweez about early baptism being meaningless. I certainly don't consider it binding on me.

Hmmm, thanks Xar, had forgotten about that. Handy for the successors huh?

Say, does that mean that in effect, the pope is actually god? If his mandate binds heaven and earth...

But, according to doctrine, the rep can, at his mere word, change the whole way that heaven works.

(And I did say in effect. ;) )

Uh huh. And anything that the pope decrees is by it's very nature divinely inspired, because it's the pope decreeing it.

In other words, there's no checks and balances that can hope to ensure that his decree is divinely inspired. You just have to take his word for it.

Actually, I got my answer in the first two posts. The rest was just something to read while Mallory was slow. :)

Xar wrote: Well, if you want the religious explanation... strictly speaking the Gospels claim that Jesus told Peter, upon granting him mandate to found the Church, "whatever you will bind on Earth, shall be bound in Heaven". This mandate was to be passed on to all of Peter's successors. So, since the Pope is Peter's successor, if he were to decide that limbo does not exist, and publicly, officially say so, then according to the mandate as given in the Gospels limbo actually would not only cease to exist, it would never have existed at all.
Is this sarcasm, or do you think the gospels really mandate all that?

It is interesting that, if Jesus, had been planning an Earthly and immediate kingdom (like, say, the one that the Jews were expecting the Messiah to provide), he would've used exactly those words to appoint a seneschal.

I'm actually hoping to do both. I doubt I'll have enough time, though.
