I expand like a maniac at the beginning... but then I like huge maps with one or two other civs, so aggression right away isn't usually an issue.

I've never been good at diplomacy... I always end up seeing a civ with a fantastic territory and just have to have it.

Aah, I always played with whatever the total number allowed was in terms of numbers of opponents.

(And I'm talking about Civ 1&2, never got 3.)

Never really bother much with diplomacy, my philosophy was simple...attack me and I'll crush you. I'm almost never the agressor.

I have Civ IV, and I must admit it is addictive as World of Warcraft and Counter-Strike wrapped in a single muffin. Unfortunately, I'm not gonna play it till another patch or two, because it's simply unplayable for me after a certain period of time. Shame on you, Take Two! Shoulda let Firaxis finish their game before publishing it.

I tried the demo, and I like it ok.

The main thing that bothers me is I can't click and drag where I want them to go. I have to hit the stupid move button.

Anyone ever play Settlers? Settlers 2, in particular, took up days of my life. I ruled at that game.

I've got to wait for Civ IV to come out for the mac. When it does, I'll be first in line.

Got it for christmas. The home comp (which has a reasonable but old graphics card) runs it but can't do the graphics right - terrain is a smooth black surface, no way to tell land from sea, mountains from plains, though this is only really a bother in trying to put the other icons in context. Since this is pretty much the same problem I had with Rome: Total War, my laptop (very poor graphics card, specifically unsupported by almost every game ever made) will do one of two things, either run the game better than the home PC (but slower), or not run it at all, which would be a shame since it's the only computer I have with me while at uni.

Got Civ IV, love it. :)
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

Won't help I'm afraid - isn't a driver problem, just the fact that the graphics card is below minimum requirements.

Edit: On a second try, I discover that the problem is with the shading - when I zoom in, I can see the terrain when the camera covers my own territory, but if I scroll only a little over the border, or zoom out too far, the whole thing goes black, including the bits I should be able to see. It does seem to work well enough though, as long as I don't send individual units into enemy territory (I get the very patchy half-shading over everything when I try to look at those units).
I've installed the patch to see, and though it made the main menu look better, it doesn't seem to have affected the in game graphics.

I'd been telling myself I'd hold off on buying this, as I know I won't be able to spare enough time to justify the purchase, but reading all this I'm getting sorely tempted. I like the character name Somberlain, I'm thinking you weren't exactly a benevolent leader!

How does the email thing work LM?
Q. Why do Communists drink herbal tea?
A. Because proper tea is theft.

You do your turn and designate the emails of all the players - I believe the game then emails the next player the turn info. Slow, but it would be fun.

Sounds a bit like chess-by-mail. It would be slow, but also a darn sight easier than trying to get everyone online at the same time.

Trust me, you find yourself MAKING time to justify it.

And as for the name, well... I'm good to my own people.

But when it comes to rival civilisations, well... genocide is fun.
