From what I can remember, it was one of those where humans are space-faring and find themselves orbitting a planet which knows nothing about the surrounding universe. The inhabitants I think were some kind of man-sized feline who could speak etc and I remember in particular they had a penchant for silk clothing (very fine silk which bruised at the slightest touch) and had much in-fighting. The humans found themselves on the planet after some kind of treachery (as usual) and some of them sided with the 'goodies' and some with the 'baddies'. The bad humans were trying to basically line their own pockets (as they do) and provided guns and things so their side could win.
Anyway enough waffling, but i only ever read the first book of the series and would like to complete it but can't remember what it was called or who it was by. Any ideas from my very vague description? I seem to remember the name may have bee something like Children of the Sun
