What a week this is turning into. First everyone in my family got so sick last weekend and I still feel pretty bad from that; now JCAHO (the national hospital accredidation organization) has turned up for a surprise visit at work and won't leave until Friday. God help us.

I feel rested after a long four day weekend. Got a lot done. Watched some amazing anime, tried to build a Gundam, finished a short story, working on three more at the same time. Oh, and the food: ate Chinese with my friend Seth, Italian with my mom. Had Bruster's ice cream twice. Can't remember what I had on my first visit, but on the second visit I had "coffee break." Excellent flavor! And in between all this fun some sporadic schoolwork, balanced with copious reading of A Feast for Crows (almost done with it!)

Bit sad and down (and disappointed in myself).

I'm so "un-mum". Son-of-SeaReach has been sick for weeks with the flu then a cold then night after night of night sweats...well, he just seems sick all the time. And I'm so un-mum I have no idea what to do...and I take him to the doctor and feel like the doctor thinks I'm some kind of mum who wants to dose their kid up on drugs for nothing. I just want someone to say to me "this is normal, he's ok". I have no idea what's normal (before I had my son I'd never even held a little kid let alone looked after one). Hopeless!

I've just got back from the doctor with my son (who had a miserable night last night coughing and screaming). He seemed so distressed and this "un-mum" had no idea what to do. I mean...for all I know he just needs to do a poo and he'll be better...but I don't know! The doctor has prescribed another course of antibiotics (he's had three courses of antibiotics in the last 6 months) and needs a chest xray. I'm thinking "have I just been given this course of antibiotics because the doctor is sick to f**k of seeing me".

Un-mum! Un-mum! There are days that I think "this poor kid...stuck with me".

Well, my husband saw a news report on the local channel that says that this is sweeping the state:

The symptoms sound exactly like what we all had. Over 400 patrons in one Lansing restaurant alone were infected a couple of weeks ago due to sick employees coming into work and preparing food. We have not been to Lansing or the restaurant in question, but this thing is supposedly incredibly infectious, hard to eradicate, and is spreading around the area very rapidly.

Yuck.

But how many mothers feel the same, Seareach? Every mother at some doubts her abilities, or worries alot about the child. It's natural.

And it sounds like the kid is lucky to have you; it sounds like you care alot.

Golden rule #1
**Not all doctors are good doctors**.

If you're not happy with your childs doctor then find a new one.
If a doctor is "sick to f**k of seeing me" ***EVEN THOUGH YOUR KID IS STILL SICK AFTER A FEW WEEKS*** then he/she has no idea what the f#ck it means to be a parent and shouldn't be a pediatrician.

You should know what's going on.
You should know even if it's: "this is normal, he's ok" that's something your doctor should tell you.

I'm no doctor, just two young 'uns of my own but I have to ask, any fever vomitting or not eating/drinking well? Coughing?

If he's had a fever for more than a few days (over 102 anyway) I'd be freaking out myself.

Hopefully you have a competent doctor that listened to his chest and found his lungs are clear.

Sorry, I usually hate when someone talks like I just did because it stresses the hell out of me but I always say it's better to be safe than sorry.

Hopefully it's just a cold that is lingering.

Now of the other hand, sometimes kids just suck.
My son had a runny nose for 6 weeks as a few of his back teeth were coming in, if I remember correctly.
And my daughter sweats while sleeping even if it's cold in her room.

Kids get sick Seareach.My kids both had pneumonia a few months age and my 3 year old spent 3 days in the hospital.My poor kids are going thrue a fighting phase,just a little while ago they got in a fight over a toy bulldozer.My 3 year old smashed my 5 year old in the face with a book,then my five year old pushed him down and kicked him several times in the ribs befor I got there to break it up.I just hope no one asks questions about the bruises.

Children do get sick - especially when they are around lots of other children for the first time. My kids did not go to day care, and when they hit kindergarten it was a nightmare. There was a secondary nightmare year when they both hit middle school, and were exposed to even more germs from even more children. Oddly enough, this did not happen when my older son got to high school. Maybe he had been exposed to most of the germs in the pool at that point in time? Now every year wrestling season is a nightmare, as they get exposed to so many germs from a close contact sport. This winter has been one episode of illness after another.

However, HLT has an excellent point about your pediatrician. No doctor should ever get tired of treating a sick child in the way described. Perhaps it is time for a second opinion, if your insurance allows it?

And yeah SeaReach, don't stress yourself about it. As LoreMaster said, it's a common thing, especially with a first child.

The very fact that you are worried about it tells me you don't need to worry about it so much.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their support. I was feeling quite down midway through the day (as you probably worked out from my over emotional post ). I managed to get a bit of sleep this afternoon while my son had a nap, and I've woken up a with a bit better outlook. And it's good to see things through the eyes of other people. I really do appreciate your posts...they made me feel a lot better when I read them!!!!

So, in all honesty, thanks everyone!

[BTW, HLT it's not pnemonia--lungs sound clear. Doctor discussed other possibilities (very uncommon things) so the xray is to eliminate those.]

I agree with everyone about "not all doctors are good doctors". A friend of mine has been dealing with her now three -year-old son having the most horrendous gastric problems since babyhood, and none of the so-called "paediatricians" even bothered to test him properly. And they made her feel inadequate and paranoid and downright stupid. Turns out the poor bub has acute oesophagitis of some kind and a malformed thingy that stops stomach acids traveling back up the gullet. My friend DEMANDED x-rays adn things after two years of being fobbed off by these 'experts' and by then, the poor kid had developed ulcers and been in pain for most of his short life! They finally got the meds right and he is improving, but I do wish that my friend would go on some current affairs program and blast the medical profession for treating mothers like 'idiots'. A mum knows something is wrong with her kid. It's instinctive. And NO DOCTOR should ignore it, let alone treat her as if she's insane.

And who says antibiotics are the ONLY treatment. We're being antibiotic'd to the point of immunity to 'em- not even the Amnion would succeed! I reckon all the doctors are all getting kickbacks from pharmaceutical conglomerates, with the amount of drugs they prescribe. Which is why I only go for natural medicines and alternative therapies now.

I hope your little man is on the mend, Sea. And you're a fabulous mum I'm sure, because Son-of always looks so happy in his pics!

my current doctor is great. but not entirely in network. so now i am faced with keeping the great doc and paying cash i don't have or going back to bad doc and not getting the stuff i need. insurance companies can go fuck themselves.
