Yeah, but if you gave Galadriel the One Ring first (a fair handicap, since Elena would have the Staff of Law), Galadriel would be crazy enough to wipe the floor with Elena. All shall love her and despair!

On a slightly more serious note...If you had to complare LOTR with TCOTC; would Covenant and Gandalph be counter parts?

Not that I think they should be compared; but I'd say Mhoram would be the Chron's equivilent of Gandalf. I know it's a stretch..which is why the stories should not really be compared.
I mean who would Cov be the counterpart of? Certanly not Frodo..perhaps Aragon..but it'd be even more of a stretch.

Frodo and Covenant are the ringbearers: can't avoid that comparison.

But then Covenant's ring is his... and the One Ring is Sauron's.

But Sauron is Foul's counterpart, and both seek the ring.

Ergo, Frodo is Lord Foul's counterpart!

Come on..the rings aren't even similar.

What can the one ring do?
Turn you invisable and get a bunch of WRaths after you.

I think the White gold is little more of a weapon.

The One Ring binds and controls all the other rings. And who knows what it could do in the hand of somebody with the lore and will to use it?

whats that about UFC being glorified bar brawls, and cheap shots rule? THATS a bunch of crap...if they were boxing, Tyson could take out any of em, but if it was an MMA match, any of em(the good ones) could take him down...hed still have a chance, though, as he IS(was) really strong and quick...and its hardly a 'bar room brawl', as each fighter knows multiple styles of martial arts...you dont just get in there and throw a bunch of punches and win a match...it takes skill...back in the day, when it was still lookin for a nitch in the world, maybe i could see that, but nowadays, its every bit as much a 'science' as boxing is...only theres more to worry about than just punches...

a little off topic, i know, but still...i couldnt let it stand...

um...i agree with what everybody else says about the subject of the thread...

I thought about a similar reply but let it go, and now I see yours.

I love the UFC and PrideFC and post at sherdog sometimes. I sparred at a local place that covers BJJ, boxing, and Muay Thai, and I felt totally out of place with just the kung fu I took for years, and now I'm thinking about joining. Anyway, I kinda' thought the same thing as was previously quoted about the UFC, but that was after only watching a few UFC vids a long time ago. Now there's so much technical aspect to it, it's really changed with the exception of a few hardcore heavyweight brawlers, and even they have a really hard time without some BJJ, sambo, or wrestling knowledge. I just wish the pay-per-views weren't so expensive~!

I like the thread and am glad to see a lot of the same posters around since last time I checked in, and it's always great to get SRD's insights/views. Darn, I'm motivated to start reading TCTC all over again now~! That'll help me keep from spending too much time watching that UFC brawling action~!

getting back on topic (somewhat)

I was thinking you could ALmost; if you squint just right; compare Foamfollower to Sam.

He stuck by Covenant no matter how much a=of a jerk he was being, and in the end, Covenant needed Foamfollower to be near in order to defeat Foul. (he wasn't hung-up on Rope as much though...)

Sorry for the OT previously. You've got a good point, Drew. If I had to pick from the two, I'd pick Foamfollower. Aside from Mhoram and TC, he was my favorite character who was totally looking out for Thomas the entire time he was around him regardless of TC's actions.

I don't like comparing TC to LotR. On a basic level, there are many similarities. Stonedowners and dwarves, woodhelvin and elves. Mhoram to Gandalf, Saltheart to Sam. Beyond that though, the stories are very different. I think that when you draw comparisons between the two you take away some of the value from TC, because I know people who woudn't read the rest of the series because the they LFB was just a lame ripoff of LotR.

About an earlier post......I agree that you can't compare Gandalf and TC Gandalf was a guide and a true born warrior (in spirit) more of a protector even. As for comparing Frodo and TC Frodo's path was more of a choice as TC didn't have one and was forced (more or less in the first chron) so he could travel away from the land. But yes I believe you could say that Frodo shared some similarities with TC of the second chron. As for the second chronicles linden was almost like Sam...I mean look she stayed by his side and in the end he couldn't defeat the Enemy (LOrd Foul......Sauron) with out her. TC in the first chrons I see the biggest similarites between Foamfollower and Sam......
