I'm with the keep the laughter camp.
It took the superman abilities away from Cov. Even with the knowledge of how to finally unse the white gold; he still needed help...he still needed Foamfollower. For a couple of reasons:
One: For himself. That one was obvious..but..
Two: For Foul, so he could seee (hear) that even as he was chained up, and most likly going to die, he could not kill the spirits of the Giants, and thus he wouldn't be able tokill the spirit of the Land..no matter ow much power he had gained from the Illearth Stone.

Another point.
The Giant's have always been posited by the author as the polar opposite of despite. This isn't spelled out - that's the fun and pain of literature. But the Giant's are the people in the Chrons who live life and love living.
But in the end, this is why it is fitting that Foamfollower's laughter is used to end Lord Foul's reign.

In the movie, you'd have to spell it out a little more blatently - Giantish humor is the opposite of despite.In the Gradual Interview was wrote:For the Giants, it was pure untarnished love of life or nothing.
