Hokitika Wild Foods Festival

Post by variol son »

This weekend I went to New Zealand's biggest Wild Food Festival in the small town of Hokitika, and man was it a blast!

I ate the following:

Mountain oysters (goats testicles)
Huhu grubs (turns into some sort of moth)
Ostrich patties
Fried snails
Wild venison souvlaki
Waffles with wild boysenberry sauce
...and I put a duck's tongue marinated in whiskey in my mouth, but once I bit into it and realised it was all grissley I gagged and had to spit it out.

Also, I wanted to eat but didn't because they ran out or I couldn't find it:

Worm truffles
Tequila worm shots
Magpie pies
Possum pate
Crocodile
Kangaroo
...and apparently there were even shots of bull semen somewhere. 8O

So a great time had by all, with most of the day spent getting well and truly sloshed on beer, sangria and alcoholic cider.

:D

Most of our food is boringly normal. We are described in culinary circles, or so I have heard, as the bestion of the iceberg lettuce because of our long reluctance to try anything new. :D

I knew I recognised the guy in nothing but his underware getting sun tan lotion rubbed on by anyone who passed by!

Oh, there was normal food as well: lamb shanks, wild beef sandwiches, marlin burgers, and whitebait. Hmmmm, whitebait. :D
