so, what does ALT+255 do again?
seriously now...? come on.
It'd take you a long time to blow up or shoot all the sheep in this country, but one diseased banana...could kill 'em all.

I didn't even know sheep ate bananas.

It does something, but in that it does nothing.

what?
ASCII symbols, produced by holding in the Alt key and typing a specific combination of numbers.

The ° symbol for instance, is achieved by holding in Alt and typing 0176.

Please, just listen. I know why you're here, Sgt. I know
what you've been doing. I know why you hardly sleep, and why
night after night you sit at your computer. You're looking
for it. I know, because I was once looking for the same
thing. And when it found me, I knew I wasn't really
looking for it, I was looking for an answer. It's the
question that drives us, Sgt. It's the question that brought you here. You know the question, just as I did...

I may move this thread....

That had occurred to me, but then I thought "move it to where?"

There's just enough vague metaphysical content to make it an unwelcome addition to The Close, I think. Alternatively we could just ship it to Gen Diss, though I'd hate to be responsible for a repeat of the ALT+255 Wars.

Perhaps it's safer here, where fewer people will see it.

Why isn't a statement like this nihilistic?

Although what were the ALT 255 wars?
Oh, dear... :( That is very emotional subject for us all at Kevinswatch. A deep tragedy for us all that took part. It started with the Rebellion, the users of ALT+255 wielded their power with a merciless fury, and the Righteous sought to end the chaos that followed the Rebellion's ruthless constant manoeuvring for power - but they never knew that in doing so they become the evil tyranny they were trying to supress - seeking to tell everyone how to behave... There were losses on both sides Skyweir, Myste, Ermingard, Ylva, Cate, Hearthcoal, Bannor are some of members that we never see again thanks to the ALT+255 Wars. There were some so affected by the wars that they had to don new guises to be accepted back into the fold - or perhaps they just wanted to create a break from the past, to try and forget the pain the war brought... Ur-Vile, First Mark Tuvor, Hierachy, PortdAN, Sylvanus - all victims or perpetrators of the ALT+255 Wars, just trying to... forget.

Got this nice tweak from www.tweaktown.com

Remove text from desktop icons

Right click on the icon whose title you want to remove and select Rename. Instead of entering any characters in the text box, hold down the ALT key and type 255 (ALT + 2 + 5 + 5). Note you need to use the NUMPAD numbers for this to work (i.e. the numbers to the right of your arrow keys, not the ones at the top of the keyboard). When you release the ALT key the title will be blank, and you can press ENTER to accept this (blank titles are usually denied under Windows, but not this way). For every other icon for which you wish to remove the title, do the same as above, but for each subsequent icon you'll have to add a '255' to the end of the string you enter. That is, to blank a second icon name, you'll need to hold down ALT and type 255 then 255 again, then release ALT. For a third, you'll have to type ALT 255 255 255, and so on.

Loremaster and I were the first two true ALT+255 masters... we were the ones who first unleashed the power of nothing on to the forum!

Then, on one fateful day... I became ALT+255... then... I told Murrin of the secret of my ascension... and he tried it also.

The watch could not withstand two of us... and so, it melded us together.

Our two accounts became as one... and only the fiery blade of admin was able to separate us again.

That was the beginning of the end of the ALT+255 wars.

Good posts Darth and James. It was a long time ago. Before my time...I arrived in the ruins that the war left behind, to Watch cynically as the survivors tried to rebuild the shattered remnants of a once great civilisation.
