Superman Returns (possible love connection with Spectre?!?)

Pre-Crisis Earth 1 Supes was flying at infinite speed, and suddenly hit the Spectre, which stopped that flight in its tracks. Spectre said he was not allowed to keep flying like that.
Superman: "Who made you boss?"
Spectre: "I believe you know the answer to that, my friend."
So Supes winds up and hits Specter in the chest with a punch that would pulverize a planet! And when the dust settles, Spectre's standing there, and says, "Are you done?"
Heh. Even Earth 1 Superman couldn't take on God!!

Reminds me of a scene from a DC/Marvel crossover story I read years and years ago in which an enraged Hulk was trying to do the same thing to Superman with one massive punch after another while Supes calmly stood his ground. That was fun. I'd like to see that movie.

Spectre was the most powerful being in the universe pre-Crisis, but like I said before, omnipotent beings are boring and he was never really that popular with fans. It was really cool when Spectre faced off against the Anti-Monitor in Crisis #10.

There's one story where Spectre is waaaaaaaaaaaaay on the other side of the universe, and flies home. To make it quicker, he makes himself really big, so the distance is less. By big, I mean galaxies pass through his body, because the stars are small enough to pass through the spaces between his atoms.
And no, the gravitational effect he would have had on everything was not mentioned.

I think it was supposed to have happend before Crisis. Of course, Spectre's power was never anything other than what God wanted it to be, so the outcome may not indicate whether it was pre- or post-Crisis.

he went crazy for a bit recently. Hal Jordan was running him for awhile. (Hal was Green lantern, turned evil and died. became Spectre, left Spectre, came back to life much better.) with no host he lost and and started killing magic users. someone will have to pick it from there, as my comic shop closed and i haven't read anything in awhile.

I was just wondering - post-Crisis Spectre was re-written; he became something of an "avenging angel" that, although still quite powerful, he was not omnipotent. How was it explained that Swamp Thing, who was never very high in the power department, was able to defeat Spectre?

That's interesting. Conventional comic book depictions of space tend to bug me because they fail to give a sense of how empty and frighteningly big the universe really is. Yes, I know comics aren't meant to be astronomy textbooks. Maybe it's too much to ask from the traditional superhero comic book art form. I never really grew up reading Marvel or DC as fervently as many here, so I guess my nostalgia isn't strong enough to cover up my sense of disillusionment or disappointment with most superheroes. Superman stands alone in my mind because he was the original. I'm not sure where I'm really going with this right now, so I'll stop.

Spectre was not defeated by Swamp Thing. He was defeated in Swamp Thing #50.

The thing about doing scientific things badly that most stands out in my mind is when Surfer and Firelord were fighting. Surfer had to give "ground" because of the insanely high amount of power Firelord was throwing at him. He was thinking, "I can absorb or reflect a near-infinite amount of energy, yet I must disengage before he harms me." I would expect someone like the Surfer, who started out more-or-less human, currently operates at an amazing level of power, and has seen even greater levels many times, to have learned that there is no such thing as "near-infinite." Anything that is not infinite is infinitely far from being infinite. And this was Englehart!

Heather Locklear is one of the hottest chicks ever. SW II is worth watching just because she's in it.

Having said that, I've never understood why Swamp Thing was so popular with comic book fans.
