GREAT news
The original Star Wars trilogy is to be released on dvd in September. So I don't have to watch the recent versions (abominations) with all the tripe added in. Lucas caved in.

Nope, me either. Luca$ has really turned into a money-grubbing bastard.

I refused to buy the special editions, because quite frankly, they are shite. I don't think Lucas sees this as a money-making exercise, as he has always acknowledged the originals no longer existed for him. Maybe he just wants to please the fans.

I like the additional footage of Bespin and all that.

Alot of it jars my viewing. Look at mos eisley. The CGI makes it look like a computer game movie. And lucas has difficulty restraining himself - everything is over the top. Whereas when he had budget restraints, the story and script ran it.

Although I am on the fence with regards to such changes made to the original movies, I agree with avitar. I think the changed that were mage in general were good. Greebo shooting first and HC replacing the original DV ghost were abomninations. I also didn't like the Jabba insert in Ep. 4. But some highlight changes:I dunno, except for the unfortunate confusion with Greebo, (and the replacement of the original ghost), I quite like the special edition ones.
- adding in windows for Cloud city so you couls see outside. It was just too cold and Logan's Run-like before. And the Cg of the entry in to Cloud City was welcome. Gives a better "feel".
- and the omission of the old Ewok song at the end. GOD that was annoying. The newer percussion one is much better.
So my thumb tends to be in favour of the changes that were made.

And it's certainly not a lack of originality or a money making opportunity to go back to the well once again when there's enough 3-d theatres to make it worthwhile and do a 3-d rerelease.

Well, except for the excessive use of the #1, I agree with you.AND HAN SHOT FIRST, DAMN IT!11111111111
Han was a nasty b@stard, and was faced with being captured by an evil Hutt! Of course he's going to blast the despicable Greeto!
HAN SHOT FIRST!!!!!!!!!!

Great news indeed! Thanks for the heads-up, Loremaster.
Good points about Cloud City, and a most excellent point regarding the Ewok song. Darn it, now you've made me hesitate about getting the un-retouched ROTJ! I can't stand that Ewok song.
I will get A New Hope and Empire for sure. There is no question about that. I'm glad Lucas has decided to give fans what they wanted all along.
HOORAY!
I generally liked the changes, too. I agree, Lucas should never have messed with the Greedo scene. But the Jabba insert didn't bother me too much, though I agree that, out of the three films, the pacing of Ep. IV suffered the most from the extra scenes.Usivius wrote:Although I am on the fence with regards to such changes made to the original movies, I agree with avatar. HOORAY!

I've never actually watched the originals. I've seen clips - that's about it.
But I don't believe that Lucas did this because he is a money-grubbing bastard. On the contrary, what difference would it make to his already enormous riches? As Hashi once said "The difference between unimaginable riches and even more unimaginable riches is trival."
Maybe he did it to actually please his fans. Or because his co-workers were pushing for it.

Maybe I'm just a cynic, but when he said something to the effect of the originals not existing anymore, I believed him and bought the new travesties. Now, I want the originals. He's doing it for the money because he knows he's got a die-hard fan base who will keep shelling out for the latest "Ultimate Edition".

I certainly agree that Han shot first, and the external Mos Eisley may have been overdone a little, (and the ghost) but otherwise, I agree with Usivius. Especially about the Bespin/Cloud City scenes.
Still, you're right Lore, the script had to carry it where the budget couldn't.
Apart from the money issue, I can still have a little sympathy for Lucas. It's going to be his legacy to the film world. Maybe he just wants it perfect, but can't make up his mind about how.

To be honest, I would probably like watching the new rehashed ones more than the originals...Avatar wrote:I certainly agree that Han shot first, and the external Mos Eisley may have been overdone a little, (and the ghost) but otherwise, I agree with Usivius.
