Some of them are rarely visited, absolutely. But it's still nice to have them, for when they're wanted.

But if they aren't there, people will probably post in gen sci-fi/fantasy. Having them there won't make people post in them, anyway.

No, having them there doesn't make people post in them. But having them there makes it possible for them to do so. :)

But how will they stop posting about Anne Mcaffrey? All they have to do is post about her in gen sci-fi/fantasy. Same with me anytime I want to discuss Dan Simmons.

It won't stop anybody from posting about them. But the more choices you give people, the more likely they are to take up one of them.

Unfortunately, that's not happening for a few of them.

 What really made it funny was that I was thinking "don't you ever give up?" when I made the post before last. ;)

I actually disagree with that, Avatar. I think that a proliferation of forum options becomes overwhelming. It becomes too much to check so many different forums every time one comes to a site, which I think explains why some of the forums are so inactive. I know I don't have time to do it, so I, for example, have rarely posted in the Harry Potter forums, even though I am a fan.

But you don't have to check all the forums.

You check/participate in the ones that interest / engage you the most, and if you have the time or inclination, you can browse the others out of interest occasionally.

That's the beauty of it. With so many topics, and options for topics, you can't get bored here, because something is always happening.

Imagine having to wade through a mallory-sized Gen Sci-Fi/Fantasy because you wanted to post something about Harry Potter?

Instead, you can just stop by that forum, and you know that everybody else who likes Harry Potter will see what you had to say, or answer your question.

Practically every topic on the Watch gets good responses, because we (try to) ensure that they're in the relevant place. If you posted your Harry Potter topic in Gen Sci, and 100 posts were made in topics before the person who wanted to comment arrived, your topic would effectively be gone, off the 1st page and into the obscurity of the back pages.

Instead, it'll stay at the top of the Harry Potter forum, and people will know that there's been a post in there which means that somebody wants to talk about HP. (I've been avoiding it myself lately, but only 'cause I haven't read book 6 yet. ;) )

It's a much more efficient way to have them split up. And if some of them are small or inactive for a while? Vain assures us that space is no issue.

The defence rests. *bows* :D

Sorry, I don't buy it. :) There are a lot of topics I would post in if they were all gathered into one forum, but I don't bother at KW cause it involves going to so many different forums for each particular topic and I don't generally have the time for that. I am on other sites that have fewer forums and finding the particular thread I want to post in has not been a problem.

Guess we are just "disagreed" on this topic. :)

Damn, I thought that was a masterful defence. I guess we are disagreed.

But remember, if you posted them all in a single forum, chances are that very few of them would remain visible or active if they were on even slightly "specialised" topics. (I have to try. ;) )

I think I should just ban Darth, dAN, Loremaster, and Avatar. That would single-handedly solve all of the Watch's problems.

I'll get around to that someday.
