Cannabalizing the old computer

Post by Sunbaneglasses »

Are there any parts in my old computer that could be used to improve my new computer? The new computer came with an all in one Lightscribe CD/DVD writer/rewriter,I have already taken the CD/DVD drive out of the old computer and added it in the new ones expansion bay because I did not want all the wear and tear on the one drive. The new computer is a Compaq (made by HP) and the old one is an HP.What I really want to know is can I add RAM,etc from the spare parts.

If you could say what motherboard both had, it would help working out what would fit.

Yeah, although typically, Compaq is a pain in the butt...usually proprietary hardware, IIRC.

I'm not very familiar with brand name computers, but most components can be moved quite happily between systems with a few exceptions:

RAM: DDRAM motherboards are not compatible with older SDRAM modules
Drives: SATA, IDE and SCSI drives are not interchangable.

A diagnostic program like SiSoftware Sandra Lite can be used to identify your motherboard, RAM and drive types if you aren't sure what's in there.
Q. Why do Communists drink herbal tea?
A. Because proper tea is theft.
