Did humans and chimps interbreed?

Post by I'm Murrin »

A detailed study of human and chimp genomes, intended to discover the point at which the species diverged, has revealed some unusual things. One explanation for the results found may be that humans and chimps continued to interbreed after diverging into seperate species - perhaps even completely rehybridising before diverging into the seperate lines that led to the species' today.
This could mean that the earliest human ancestor fossils might actually be evolutionary dead ends from before the two species fully diverged.

That certainly gives more historical importance to the term "Hot Monkey Love". I think any form of species reunification is best left to the distant past. I cant imagine what a Human/Chimp hybrid would be like at this point though when I see the hair growing on my back it does raise some interesting questions. :-)
