I wasn't allowed to 'date' until I was sixteen, so I guess my definition of 'young' for us to set an example for would be anyone under sixteen.
However, I did encourage Beorn to read SRD when he was ten, so I guess it all depends on what is being discussed. I was unhappy with him reading the vulgarity in Runes when it came out, but understand SRD's POV about it as he discusses in the GI. And it did open up communication between Beorn with Paul and me regarding language and why we feel what is acceptable and not.
But, in everyday communication, such as on message boards, I feel a higher language standard should be maintained, not just for an example to younger eyes, but so those who participate are not lowered to a level where vulgarity is common place.
For those who enjoy using vulgarity everday, I apologize for my POV. Paul is one of those people, as he and his Dad both used it constantly as an adjective when Paul was growing up in NYC. But, after 18 years of marriage, Paul has come up with colorful expressions to use in place of vulgarity, after much heavy sighing and eye rolls from me whenever he did use vulgarity. And, he does still have his moments. @@

In real life, I swear a lot. Constantly almost. This is becoming more painful for me as my friends have children, because I'm constantly getting an elbow in the ribs from the GF. When I write, it's not a problem obviously, but in my speech though...
However, I do think Menolly has a point about showing by example that "profanity" is not necessary in order to express oneself accurately. It's just that in speech, few words are as emotionally descriptive as ****. It's all in the tone of course, which makes it pointless in the written medium I suppose.

Menolly, I wouln't worry too much...KW is probebly the most G-rated...okay maybe PG-13 message board out there.

Back in the old BBS days, there were certain boards you couldn't get on unless you were 18 or over. Well, all you had to do was *say* you were 18. Needless to say, I spent a fair amount of time on those boards (not even counting the fact that it took at least 5 minutes to download a jpg ). I was not scarred for life. If anything, it was nice to be treated with the respect due my posts, not my age. I'd have been appalled at anyone I was trying to have a level conversation with modifying their behavior because of my age. It was also nice that anyone who acted like a 15 year old punk was just assumed to be underage and kicked.
If anything, I say raise the age limit on the registration page to 18. It won't stop anybody (well, I dunno, maybe if there's filters installed on their comp), and it could only increase the quality of conversation. Yeah, perhaps a few might go overboard, but that could be corrected.
