Removing Garfield's Thought Bubbles

Post by Nav »

Looking at the Garfield page on Wikipedia the other day (someone mentioned that Jim Davis was dead, but they obviously had him confused with Lorenzo Music) I noticed a section called 'Removing Garfield's Thought Bubbles', which Neil Gaiman had taken notice of in his blog. The trend was started on the Truth and Beauty Bombs forums and the result is a comic that is no longer about the lazy, greedy, waspish cat but Jon, a lonely and pathetic character who talks to his pets.

Here are some good examples I found:

A. Because proper tea is theft.

Some of the ones on the Truth and Beauty thing are great. Garfield is definitely much wittier without his "wit".

I dunno...it's an interesting adjustment to make. I generally like Garfield and his casual callousness and cruelty.

Very different to see it as being about Jon.

Garfield's overstatement annoys me. Based on the examples Nav linked to, Garfield expresses everything he needs to without words.

I'm with you, Cov. I never liked Garfield, but it's not all his fault. See, I had this annoying friend who was 150% into Garfeild (and Black Sabbath) when I was a kid, so I avoided Garf like the plague. And Sabbath, for that matter. But, even so, if it were as good as Bloom County or Calvin & Hobbes, I'd have liked it in spite of Grant Annoying Martin.

Garfield used to be one of my favorite Sunday comics, though I'm not so sure anymore. I loved the big fat cat, and lasagna was my favorite food for a while. I wonder if Davis knew the comics could be viewed from this angle? I suppose he did. Stop answering your own questions, Foul. People will think you're crazy. Sorry.
