I got Final Cut, and I have to say it sounded like outtakes from the Wall. I agree with the "PF is the sum of its parts" viewpoint, and while MLoR and DB might have been better with Waters helping, I view FC as practically a Waters solo album, and frankly, the weakest effort in their library. I prefer the latter stuff to it.

weakest? that would be a GReat Collection of Dance Songs. :)

the best Floyd effort would have been a combination of all four members. but in the end stages, Waters made that impossible. Wright was neglected, and has done fantastic stuff since Floyd reformed. (with the group and solo)

But the best guitar-work of Floyd, ever. I think the Wall is an interesting trip - but it doesn't go anywhere you'd want to visit.

I used to think The Wall was a bit overlong myself. Hard to describe, but the bugger grows on you (or me, anyway). My first listen was like, 'Yeah, songs like "Mother"/"Hey You"/"Comfortably Numb"/"Run Like Hell" are great, but the rest is filler.' Since then, though, I've grown to love each track (but "Hey You" is still my favorite ;) ).

I listened to that album over and over for about a month; I could not get enough of it. Then, Premanent waves came out, and I listened to that album over and over for about a month....life was good.

the album is too long and there is too much filler. and the guitar work is hardly the best Gilmour has ever done. Wish You Were Here is much better fret work by Dave.

the truly great songs on the wall...
Mother, Empty Spaces (full version), Goodbye Blue Sky, Vera/Bring the Boys Back Home, Comfortably Numb, Run Like Hell, Waiting For the Worms, ANother Brick III.

null's right - The Wall's flaw is its bloatedness.

But dAN and Foul are also right - it's still a great album.

Well if post-Dark Side includes the Gilmour era records, then no it isn't the weakest, they would be. But if post-Dark Side is just Wish, Animals, The Wall, and The Final Cut, then yeah, I think The Wall is the weakest of that group.

You two are so wrong! Final Cut is the weakest post-Dark Side cd, hands down. The Wall is a masterpiece, as were Wish and Animals. The only crime Momentary ans Division can be accused of is they weren't nearly as depressing without Waters as they would have been with him.

There's something about Comfortably Numb where Gilmore seems to reach a new level as the PF guitarist. There's a certiain Neil-Young-ish style that he adopts and perfects in his own way ... you can here it again in On the Turning Away, High Hopes, and especially Sorrow. I really like it, whatever it is.

Lies!!! Lies, I tell you! LI....oh, wait. I mean, yes, I agree wholeheartedly! Gilmore gets more tone out of his Strats and Teles than just about anyone else, ever. He also did most of the bass lines in the studio, and that's probaly part of why I like him better than Waters; Gilmore appeals to the musician in me. That said, all of this is just different levels of love for me; there was no bad Pink Floyd album or member in my book. They have always been in my top 5, and will always remain there.

Always loved Gilmour's guitar licks, especially when he has two guitars harmonizing, such as after the lyric, "Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!" The guitar hook that comes after that always kills me.

Great solos all over the song "Dogs", too. My favorite is right after the line, "Just another sad old man, all alone and dying of cancer." And who could forget what is arguably Gilmour's most intense solo: the PULSE version of Comfortably Numb! Also very partial to: the entirety of Marooned, the solo on Fletcher Memorial Home, and the repeating hook he does on Run Like Hell.

LOL No way, dAN. The Gilmour records are shite in comparison, IMO. They're all the music of Pink Floyd without the bite. And the music isn't even as good as it was in the '70s! The Final Cut is a masterwork - the lyrics are fantastic, the themes are well realized, the guitar when used is solid, the orchestration is borderline gorgeous.

If you're saying the Gilmore PF doesn't bite, then I agree! Other than that, I refuse to accept the opinions of a guy who wasn't even alive when the masterpiece known as the Wall was made!

I like Gilmour's first solo. it has a nice 70's vibe. the second had moments, but was a bit too slick.
