The Sheriff, Sandy, and a small gleam of hope.
Well, that says it all doesn't it? The sheriff's blood was spilt, yet he has not been introduced to the land, as is the same with Sandy, Jeremiah's caretaker. I have been reading through these myriad posts, questions, etc, and have been coming up with a variety of ideas, extensions of ideas and whatever else, but this particular piece was brought on by the Creator's lack of appearance discussion. I wonder where Sandy is? The Sheriff? ROGER?!!! where the hell is he?!?! where are THEY?!! will the be found in the land somewhere? maybe quivering in fear underneath a big rock? (come on, how funny would it be to see the sheriff in such straits? okay....... so thats it for now...... i just want some feedback as to possible locations....... intent? did the creator talk to one of them instead of Linden? let me know what you think........

Linden even says so to herself somthing like:
I mean, what use would it be? They have no powers to offer Foul of the Creator, they have no White gold, or health sense."They have no part in this"
I thought you were a ripe grape

I agree, they have no powers. Well, none that we know of. But neither did Linden (other than that she's a healer, but before she got to the Land we didn't know how important that would be). Maybe Sandy's devotion to taking care of Jeremiah is important. Perhaps either of them is already under Foul's coercion. Or perhaps Lytton's burnished steel pistol has a Lore of it's owndrew wrote:Linden even says so to herself somthing like:I mean, what use would it be? But remember, this is only something that Linden thinks... that the Land and Foul are not their problem. That doesn't make it true. I'm sure TC thought the same thing 10 years ago but that didn't keep Linden out of the Land.

Actually, of course, TC never seriously thought Linden wasn't going to be part of the summoning in the SC... since the first moment they met, she told him she had seen the old man, and that's kind of a giveaway. TC hoped he could spare her, but part of him knew he couldn't (I think he says it somewhere too).Relayer wrote:I agree, they have no powers. Well, none that we know of. And the "sparkles" thing - which were lightning, actually - is true; that alone would be enough to remove candidates out the list of the summonings. And if Foul has to go through so much trouble to summon people (he can only summon them if they are dying, he needs blood, etc.) why would he go through the additional hassle of summoning a horde of people?

I think I generally agree that the Sherrif and Sandy wont show up;
The sherrif is fairly one dimensional and wouldn't be much good to Foul unless somebody needed a good cursing out.
I do think Roger and Joan are definately there already.

I don't think people have to be actually dying to be summoned to the Land. Linden was injured, but certainly not fatally, at the summoning in TWL.And if Foul has to go through so much trouble to summon people (he can only summon them if they are dying, he needs blood, etc.) why would he go through the additional hassle of summoning a horde of people?
I think the possibility of Sandy making it to the Land remains open, but not the sheriff. Perhaps SRD wasn't even sure of having Sandy in the following books as he wrote Runes, but left himself a potential character to write in the series later books.
Cowboy: Why you doin' this, Doc?
Doc Holliday: Because Wyatt Earp is my friend.
Cowboy: Friend? Hell, I got lots of friends.
Doc Holliday: ... I don't.

But it's possible - it was never made wholly clear - that Linden wasn't consciously summoned by Foul... Foul wanted Covenant, and he could only get him into the Land if he was dying. I always got the impression that Linden "tagged along" - maybe sent by the Creator, or more likely being caught up in the summoning spell as it took a hold of Covenant, since she was very close to him, in distress, and injured - and Foul rearranged his plans to include her afterwards.Aleksandr wrote:I don't think people have to be actually dying to be summoned to the Land. The circle of lightning which was mentioned several times is, I believe, the boundary beyond which no one can be summoned to the Land. But even within the circle, you have to be seriously wounded, or dying, in order to get to the Land. And even then, there's a chance that the summoner - Foul - can somehow discriminate. I can't find an old post of mine, which I made shortly after re-reading Runes, in which I had collected quotes that pointed at such an idea...

According to Roger, Jeremiah wasn't actually there at all - at least, his spirit wasn't in his body in the first place. "He's an empty carcass"... "has been for 10 years".. Roger implied that Jeremiah had either been in the Land or trapped between the worlds all along. Even if he wasn't, he was under crossfire; he could just as easily have been shot like Linden was.Jerico wrote:Jerimiah wasn't injured (that we know of) ? He is in the Land
Well if he (Jeremiah) has been there for ten years I doubt it was any bullet that performed the necessary blood sacrifice. I would venture to guess it was the burning of his hand. Maybe this is the two places at once that we have been hearing about.

Makes ya wonder if the Creator has any powers in the real world or how else could he have choosen Linden, or TC for that matter, even before Foul's (Drool's initially) efforts to translate them.
Well, Runes it's undetermined if the Creator is involved, but in the second series Linden was choosen by him, as was TC before her, and thereafter events lead her to "just happen" to be in the right spot right next to TC to be translated along. If she had been a moment too late or too soon, then she would have missed the ride. Therefore, the Creator could have his hands busy and able to mold events in our world by design.
