Thanks for replying--yes Dune should have been #3 but I had just finished Hyperion at the time, and was really digging the Shrike. 8)

I'm also surprised William Gibson doesn't make the list.

Cail Gibson is at #9!!! 8) 8O LOOK! 8O

If I redid it now Iain M. Banks' The Algebraist and Simmon's The Rise of Endymion (Hyperion Cantos) would be on there too.

Second Foundation refers to the entire Foundation series, so that's six smarty cat! :P

What Gibson have you read, my man? I've read Nueromancer, Johnny Muemonic (sp), Mona Lisa Overdrive and The Difference Engine with Bruce Sterling. 8) (actually The Difference Engine should be on this list)

I've only read Neuromancer, Johnny Mnemonic, and his (unfilmed) script for Alien 3. His stuff was a real breath of fresh air.

If you like that kind of stuff read:
Hardwired by Walter Jon Williams
Green Eyes by Luscious Shepard
and Islands in the Net by Bruce Sterling

(and then lots of Neal Stephenson, of course :D )

Alas, I've pretty much given up reading novels (with rare exceptions, such as Runes), because I have a painfully small book-buying budget and that all goes for nonfiction. Right now I'm shelling out $50 a pop for books on various Germanic languages. It doesn't take long to use up a budget at that rate.

So it doesn't look like I'll be able to read the other 48 anytime soon.
Where I live they have these things called "libraries." :) I've got John Stossel's latest book on hold as we speak.

Snow Crash was amazing. I've got to reread that one. The Foundation series is awwwesome. Has anyone here read the whole thing? Including all the robot and empire books that tie into it? (There are 20 something.) The last one in the series--last one written, anyway--is especially poignant. It has a scene with Harry Selden gazing at a visual representation of his mathmatics, his dream, his vision . . . as he dies. I can't help but think this was a symbol of Asimov himself: an elder professor looking back on his life, his creation, and being satisfied.

Asimov's letters are also fascinating. This guy wrote every single day for 70+ years, 9 hours a day, typing 80 words a minute and never revising. That's how you publish over 500 books, folks. He was a machine.

John Stossel? As in 20/20? That would be a work of Fiction I hope. Dude is on more people's payrolls than than a greasy accountant in late March (tax time in USA is Mid-april).

Anyway, great list Danlo. there is much on it that I have not read, that I will now endeavor to read. My problem is that I like Sci-Fi with depth, where the story is more about PEOPLE who happen to be in a SCI-Fi story, rather than a story about ships and furture stuff that happens to contain a lot of people who are described with a lot of adverbs. Follow me?

Here here. Amazon and Barnes and Noble have us almost forgetting about these important institutions. Another benefit is that your house/condo/apt/flat/hut doesn't fill up with so much flamable material.

Indeed. Gotta love the Deliverator. Now go read Cryptonomicon. It's really an order of magnitude better, if you can believe it.

Better than Snow Crash WayFriend? Shall have to find it. :D

Love Gibson too. Virtual Light and Count Zero have to figure in Gibson fans reading list.
