The Vow was corrupted when the three Bloodguard were perverted by Foul. It was broken when the Bloodguard decided to end their service. Which is important, because the corruption of the vow is really a matter of opinion, but it was the Bloodguard's consensus that it was, and so they decided to end their service.

yah know...i gotta admit, the Haruchai in general were the second reason i read the Chrons multiple times.(the first being Saltheart Foamfollower) and now, this thread is really giving me reason to wanna read the whole dang thing yet again.

i'll revisit this thread when i have done so.

Brinn...of course! :)
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. I think it would be a much closer fight.....remember in Gilden-Fire Korik was put to the test by Tull, who was the newest Bloodguard. The text says that Tull had modern skills and although Korik won the fight, Tull really pushed him to the limit. We're only talking about 1000 years or so of difference. On the other hand, Brinn would have an additional 3500 years of Haruchai combat techniques. My money's on Brinn.

The moniker non withstanding I would have to go with Bannor---he was the reason i fell in love with the series to begin with. IMHO he drove the first series, except for TC, it was Bannor who had to help TC get thru many decisions et al. Yes Foamfollower was also there, but I just feel the Bannor drove TC with a moral compass.

but I do love Brinn and his decisions

Just curious...which decisions? I never thought of Brinn being much a decider, but perhaps I just don't remember well enough.

Well the big one to challenge the Guardian...I mena your talking about it is a fight to the death and he HAD to see if he was up to the challenge. Also IIRC he was the Bloodguard that made the decisions on who and how the defense of TC would happen in the second series. Now forgive me if I'm wrong I havent read the series in about 2 yrs

Really?
I think of the Hurachai/Bloodguard as one giant amorphous entity. There is no distinction of one Hurachai/Bloodguard from another for me. I think if you take one Hurachai/Bloodguard and supplant him with another Hurachai/Bloodguard in their situation the outcome would be the same. If Bannor had fought the guardian he would have become Ak-Haru Kenaustin Ardenol. If Brinn had been around when Korik was corrupted he too would have broken the vow.

I gotta go with Bannor all the way-not just for things like the no nonsense way he delt with Trell when he attacked Covenant at Revelstone in TIW but because so many times( right from the beginning of LFB) his deadpan responses and reactions to certain things were just HILARIOUS!

I like Bannor dont know exactly why perhaps because he is the first *Haruchai* mentioned
or because he seems even "cooler" to me then Brinn

Yes, definitely Bannor.
Five reasons:

1. His name is cool.
2. I think he could beat the crap out of Brinn.
3. He was TC's guardian Haruchai (that in itself has got to try anyone's patience. Well done, Bannor for not choking TC to death out of pure frustration! )
4. I knew Bannor more than I knew Brinn.
5. Let's face it, Bannor rocks on ice. I'd like to say that I grew up with Bannor. It's a matter of preference, I guess, just like if anyone grows up liking butter instead of margarine.

Bannor. . .obviously.

I've *got* to go with Bannor on this one. For one, thing Bloodguard trumps regular old Haruchai any day. And I always remember stuff like TC saying, "Go to hell! Don't you ever sleep?" And of course, Bannor answering, "The Bloodguard do not sleep." "You're already in hell." Or, "How long has she (Bannor's wife) been dead?" "Two thousand years."

Brinn, though less sad, is (to me) less interesting. If Bannor judged TC, he of all people had *earned* the right to judge him. . .remember, he saw Kevin in his prime and swore that Vow, only to watch the world and all the old Lords had created die--and he could do nothing to stop it, because Kevin sent him away. *And*, after all that, he had to watch the Vow get broken.

That automatically tips Bannor above Brinn. I think Brinn would have gone insane.

Well yeah. I always saw Cail as the natural extension of Bannor.

Thomas Covenant Discussion -> Bannor or Brinn

Post by SleeplessOne »

Brinn.

Bannor was a complex and poignant character, but Brinn was bad-ass.

Consider the text itself :
Brinn's mien held the completeness to which Bannor had only aspired
Beside him, even Cail appeared frangible and limited
His story arced similarly to Bannor's in that he realised the folly of the extremity of Haruchai extravagance after he and Cail failed to resist the song of the merewives and promptly renounced his service to Covenant and co.
But by facing the esteemed ak-Haru Kenaustin Ardenol in combat, the very worth of the Haruchai was measured, and Brinn's rope-a-dope victory restored a measure of dignity to the Haruchai in the wake of their abandoned Vow.

Also, his proposed punishment for Linden after her perceived complicity in the death of Hergrom in was one of the funniest things I read in the entire TCTC :
Without hesitation, Brinn replied, 'Let her speak the name of a Sandgorgon'
Now that's taking 'an eye for an eye' to extremes - but that's our Brinn ! Did he not serve us well ?!

well said, and correct. !! good post.

Brinn sufficed. and I would have liked for Linden to speak the name of a Sandgorgon. She prolly would have depressed it so much it would have returned to Sandgorgon's doom on its own, needing counseling.

Since it came back up....

The Vow was corrupted when Kevin sent them away and they left. It was further corrupted when Bannor touched TC's ring to the Staff of Law. And again when Bannor revealed the Power of the Seventh Ward. And ultimately with Korik. Korik's fate is what made the Bloodguard realize that the Vow was hosed.

My ex has my books, but I believe that Bannor explains this to TC in TPtP.

I find it odd (and maybe one of these days I'll post it to the GI) that SRD hasn't addressed Bannor's actions at Mount Thunder as being contrary to the Vow, as Bannor clearly used two weapons.
