Personally, neither title does it for me. I still think that: "This Day All Gods Die" is one of the coolest book titles ever
The title is from the legend of berek- half-hand:
"Thus he ran, hunted by death, and the memory of the shadow was upon him. For three days he ran, never stopping, never resting -and for three days the King's host came behind him like a murderous beast, panting for blood. At the last of his strength and the extremity of his despair, he came to Mount Thunder. Climbing the rock-strewn slope, he threw himself down atop a great boulder and wept, saying, `Alas for the Earth. We are overthrown, and have no friend to redeem us. Beauty shall pass utterly from the Land.'
"But the rock on which he lay replied, `There is a Friend for a heart with the wisdom to see it.'
" `The stones are not my friends,' cried Berek. `See, my enemies ride the Land, and no convulsion tears the earth from under their befouling feet.'
" `That may be,' said the rock. `They are alive as much as you, and need the ground to stand upon. Yet there is a Friend for you in the Earth, if you will pledge your soul to its healing.'"

True enough. But, to my embarassment, I was reminded of Lord Kevin's Lament:Vain wrote:The title is from the legend of berek- half-hand:

Did You intend

I like "shall" better. Sounds more...ummm...poetic.

And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.

~this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you~
...for then I could fly away and be at rest. Sweet rest, Mom. We all love and miss you.

Maybe this isn't so dire. It's possible that SRD's Esteemed Webmaster simply made a mistake and put "should" on that page instead of "shall".
If it's *not* just a typo...then I agree that "shall" is better than "should". But I also agree with whoever said that if we kick up a fuss with SRD, he's liable to go with "should" just to be contrary.

It could be worse than that. He might re-release some of his other books:
Power Should Preserve
Should Wield White Gold
A Man Should Ride Through
A Dark and Hungry God Might Arise
This Day All Gods Should Die
The Man Who Should Have Killed His Brother

Bummer. Ah, well. I suppose I shall read it, regardless.kevinswatch wrote:No, SRD confirmed that it's "should" in the GI. Plus, it used to say "shall" on the website, but it was changed recently.-jayaliantha wrote:Maybe this isn't so dire. That's right. Didn't SRD state that he wasn't even sure what Lord Foul's Bane meant---didn't know what "Bane" referred to?? Crazy publishers.Fist and Faith wrote:SRD is certainly one of the biggies. But let us not forget his answer when he was asked exactly what Lord Foul's bane is: "I called that book Lord Foul's Ritual. My publisher changed the title." (From memory, so not an exact quote.)
Shall does have a poetic ring to it and although it does add a sense of importance to the title, I personally don't have a problem with the more pedestrian Should.
I don't know about the rest of the world, but shall is not a commonly used word in the States anymore. I pretty much understand the rules for shall's usage, it just sounds out of place in everyday usage, possibly even comes across as a bit stuffy or haugty. I know the title of a great book isn't everyday usage, but I still won't be disappointed if Should makes the final cut!
