She sells sea shoulds on the sea-shore

Personally, neither title does it for me. I still think that: "This Day All Gods Die" is one of the coolest book titles ever

The title is from the legend of berek- half-hand:

"Thus he ran, hunted by death, and the memory of the shadow was upon him. For three days he ran, never stopping, never resting -and for three days the King's host came behind him like a murderous beast, panting for blood. At the last of his strength and the extremity of his despair, he came to Mount Thunder. Climbing the rock-strewn slope, he threw himself down atop a great boulder and wept, saying, `Alas for the Earth. We are overthrown, and have no friend to redeem us. Beauty shall pass utterly from the Land.'
"But the rock on which he lay replied, `There is a Friend for a heart with the wisdom to see it.'
" `The stones are not my friends,' cried Berek. `See, my enemies ride the Land, and no convulsion tears the earth from under their befouling feet.'
" `That may be,' said the rock. `They are alive as much as you, and need the ground to stand upon. Yet there is a Friend for you in the Earth, if you will pledge your soul to its healing.'"

I like "shall" better. Sounds more...ummm...poetic. :)
And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.

Maybe this isn't so dire. It's possible that SRD's Esteemed Webmaster simply made a mistake and put "should" on that page instead of "shall".

If it's *not* just a typo...then I agree that "shall" is better than "should". But I also agree with whoever said that if we kick up a fuss with SRD, he's liable to go with "should" just to be contrary.

It could be worse than that. He might re-release some of his other books:

A Dark and Hungry God Might Arise

This Day All Gods Should Die

No, SRD confirmed that it's "should" in the GI. Plus, it used to say "shall" on the website, but it was changed recently.-jay

I should still actually read the book seeing that I've had it for quite a while now.

I think I should
Therefore I shall

We still have a chance to turn the tide! We need to raise our voices!

( Remember when Donaldson was calling Linden's son Zebediah?!?! We all spoke up, and got the name changed to Jeremiah. And it was much better. )

"Should" is not a done deal, and I'm sure all parties that have a say in the title will see the superiority of "Shall" before it comes out.

:D SRD is certainly one of the biggies. But let us not forget his answer when he was asked exactly what Lord Foul's bane is: "I called that book Lord Foul's Ritual. My publisher changed the title." (From memory, so not an exact quote.)

That's right. Didn't SRD state that he wasn't even sure what Lord Foul's Bane meant---didn't know what "Bane" referred to?? Crazy publishers.

Shall does have a poetic ring to it and although it does add a sense of importance to the title, I personally don't have a problem with the more pedestrian Should.

I don't know about the rest of the world, but shall is not a commonly used word in the States anymore. I pretty much understand the rules for shall's usage, it just sounds out of place in everyday usage, possibly even comes across as a bit stuffy or haugty. I know the title of a great book isn't everyday usage, but I still won't be disappointed if Should makes the final cut!
