Well, except that Unfettered Ones, as far as we know, were humans who learned parts of Kevin's Lore at the Loresraat and then took the Rite of Unfettering to pursue their own personal visions of Earthpower (like the Unfettered One who called the animals to defend the Wraiths of Andelain, or the Unfettered One who healed TC in TPTP). I tend to believe that if the Glimmermere Unfettered One had been there since before the arrival of the new Lords, the new Lords would have known he couldn't possibly be an UO. Vice versa, if he came after the first new Lords, they knew whether he was an UO or not. Hence, I tend to believe that his androgynous appearance could simply be a result of more mundane reasons; for example, it could be that the Unfettered One was a hermaphrodite. Or that the part of Lore he had discovered changed his appearance to that of a "perfected" human being (during the Middle Ages, some alchemists believed the androgynous human being to be the perfect human being, because it contained both male and female).

Or maybe his features were just androgynous...not clearly distinguishable as male or female. You need be neither a eunuch nor a hermaphrodite for that.

Sorry Nerdanel, I think you've got an unhealthy obsession withthe Viles and Demondim. ;)

(Ha, now that I've said that, the whole cast is going to turn out to be Viles/Demondim or their spawn...or wait...Viles crossed with Demondim...Vile Demondim Spawn...:D )

I didn't say that I particularly believe in that idea, but it may well be that the bizarre Unfettered One is one of those hooks that SRD picked from the First Chronicles to retcon in order to give the illusion that he had meant it that way all along.

By the way, I didn't think Viles at first. I just noticed the suspicious connection between the descriptions. The Vile theory is the only one I can think of that could explain why Theomach and an Unfettered One could belong to the same race, if they indeed do. Can anyone think of an alternate explanation other than "pure coincidence"?

Apophenia is a fun ability to have. :)

I'm posting this here for Nerdanel to take a look at, especially after the rather lengthy discussion we had here and in the Thomas Covenant forum about "the colors of magic" and how
Spoiler
Covenant's eyes glowing red in Chapter 6 of Fatal Revenant, as told by danlo
might relate to them.
The Gradual Interview wrote: Walter Langendorf: Drool has red glowing eyes, like lava. Ordinary Cave-Wights don't have eyes like this. Why does Drool have these eyes? Is this part of the sickening brought on by his misuse of the Staff of Law? Is it something he used the Staff to alter, like the moon? Is it a preexisting condition, perhaps part of what allowed him to rise to boss of the Cavewights?
Inquiring minds want to know!

Ultimately I think we have to blame Lord Foul. It's an effect of the misuse of power--and it does not bode well for Drool's future. <grin>
