Could SRD not think of a better name than Lord Foul?
Personally I think its a gash name for someone of such potent power.

Maybe its just me, and I should have explained myself a little better. The names you quote there are other characters name for him, but his chosen name and the name SRD uses to describe in narrative is Lord Foul. I sometimes wonder if there would not be a better name for him for description than that.

i absoloutely love how SRD chooses the names for his characters. the name Foul explains everything about him compared to everyone else. think. Lord Foul is this unbearable, repulsive character, so why not a name such as Foul? i think it fits perfectly to be honest...

Fleshharrower was moksha raver's Giant name....the Giants called Foul Satansheart.A Gunslinger wrote:I was just bein' snarky. Foul is sort of well..descriptive to a fault, I suppose. I think that "Foul" is actually a nickname, but it is used by TC almost exclusively.
I like the Giants name for him...Was is "Flesh harrower?"

Satansheart Soulcrusher, to be exact about it
I thought I read in the GI that SRD said his intention was to depict a being that was completely evil and wanted to be clear about it right from the start... ie. a name like "Sauron" doesn't itself convey evil or malice. But he also said that he was young and idealistic and if he had it to do over again he'd have picked another name.
I still want to know what Foul was called when he was on the Council of Lords.

Yes indeed Fleshharrower was the ravers name, its been a while since I read the books. (Which reminds me, I must reread them sometime).
I also agree that a name like "Sauron" just doesnt cut the mustard. Satansheart Soulcrusher is more along the lines, but ideally suited to the Giants as it is their way of description. Its good to hear that SRD would have liked to pick another name, as it was one of the first things I picked up on when I first ever read the books (when I was 11), that the name just didnt seem quite right.

I agree that initially I thought "Lord Foul? That's crap."
But Foul has never actually told us what, if anything, his real name is. Quite possibly he doesn't have one. It's my opinion that 'Lord Foul' is, like 'the Grey Slayer' and 'Satansheart Soulcrusher'*, a name given to him. If an evil entity arose in the world and didn't introduce itself, you wouldn't concoct a nice, fantasy-ish name for it, you'd more likely call it something fairly descriptive so no-one is in any doubt as to what it is.
*as an aside, I do find myself wondering why 'Satansheart' when Satan doesn't exist in the Land...

Hmm...good question....CovenantJr wrote:*as an aside, I do find myself wondering why 'Satansheart' when Satan doesn't exist in the Land...
Hey, look that way! *Brains Covenant with some blunt object and drags him into some closet*
Problem solved.
I actually like the name. It's really pretty corny sounding if'n you ask me, but it's a very no-nonsense title for a villain who's under no delusions of grandeur and such. Reminds me of "The Dark One" in the Wheel of Time; he also has numerous names, all more interesting, but the 'boring' one is the most widely used.
I dunno, if he was called SatansHeart all the time i think it would b kinda cliche, as if his actions cant emphaise how bad he is.

Good question, Relayer. It's not ever mentioned, Foul's name while on the Council. What would he refer to himself as? Does he call his own self Foul or the Despiser? I can't recall. If there is any retro stuff in Revenant and beyond, perhaps these things will be revealed. I'd love to see more on the times of the first Lords. Too many questions remain unanswered.
Heard my ears aright? Did not the gaddhi grant me this glaive?

I can see Kevin's introduction of Foul to the Council...Rocksister wrote:Good question, Relayer. It's not ever mentioned, Foul's name while on the Council. What would he refer to himself as? "Ah, members of the council, here is my good and trusted friend, Foul the Despiser... I bring him before you so that we may name him a Lord and entrust upon him all our secrets. No no, he's really a nice guy, don't let the name and the carious eyes fool you!" *voice lowers to a whisper* "he's got a nasty eye disease, that's why when you look at his eyes they feel like fangs... no, it's true, he told me himself!"

by the way, i went over the council of the Lords last night, and they refer to him many times as Lord Foul

Don't you remember his intro....
I have had many names. To the Lords of Revelstone I am Lord Foul the Despiser. To the Giants of Seareach, Satansheart and Soulcrusher. The Ramen name me Fangthane. In the dreams of the Bloodguard I am Corruption. But the people of the Land call me the Gray Slayer.
I personally like 'the Despiser'. Whenever I want to say that I really intensely hate something, I use the word despise now.
