I don't watch all that much horror for the same reason. I'm skeptical about the supernatural in real life, but when it comes to horror movies it's easy to put myself in a naive state, open to suggestion. So it doesn't take much for something onscreen to jolt me. I want a good scare, like everyone else. But that makes me very selective about what horror movie I see these days.

Oh, and how could I forget about Altered States? It may not qualify as a horror movie to some, but it messed with my mind anyway. This movie showed me that taking hallucinatory drugs was a baaaad idea.

The Cell spooked my imagination, too. It may not have the same primal scare factor as the other horror films mentioned, but the imagery in this one really haunted me. I'm guessing this movie would be classified more as psychological thriller than as true horror (whatever that means). This also remains the only Jennifer Lopez movie I've seen. I'm glad I picked a good one, as I don't care for any of her other self-aggrandizing projects.

when i was six my grandmother took me to the Strand theater to see a Poe film marathon. the night before halloween. she was sooo cool.
all the films had Vincent Price. we got there just as The Pit and the Pendulum was coming on. arg. next was The Fall of the House of Usher. omg. scared the bejesus outa me. then The Raven. yes i made it through all three with minimal BR breaks. Haunted Palace was the fourth film...i couldn't take another so we left just after it started.

I think the horror (or Psychological thriller) films that really get me are the ones with real human characters that are psychologically twisted. The whole idea that there may really be someone who thinks like that makes my skin crawl. The Zombies, Vampires, Ghosts, Freddy Kruegers, Aliens things sometimes give me a decent jolt, but, the real fear comes from something very real. Rope, the Alfred Hitchcock movie from 1950 is one that disturbs me for a couple of days after watching it (The movie itself, doesn't dive into the creepiness all that much, but, the whole ideology the guys had and seeing nothing wrong with what they had done, just creeps me out.

Yes, exactly. Except, American Psycho, was too much of a comedy, which took the edge off his creepiness.

well Psycho was intended as a parody. with the most over the top scenes imaginable.
