Actually, I've never skydived myself, but my grandfather was a jumpmaster for the HALO Committee. If I recall correctly, he told me you don't really feel the classic sensation of falling that you'd expect; all you get is an immense pressure. Most new people read their altimeters to tell what altitude they are, but people like my grandfather could tell when to open by just feeling the pressure change as they fell.
