Prized Possessions

Okay...kids are off the list, but anything else else is fair game.

What item, or items do you own that you cherish?

Why?

To some people it may be a big screen TV or their car.
To others it may be their pets.
Or a book.
Or an album.

I think it would be interesting to know what other people hold as their favorite things.

1) Music CDs; Bach, Beethoven, Beatles. Can't live without music! Well, I could, but I'd have to be a hunter-gatherer who only had room for physiological needs.

2) My computer. Plays all my music, has my written works, my video games, access to the Internet. Nah, it's not essential at all.

3) Krups FDD912 Expert Waffle Maker with Rotary System. Whenever I'm using this one, it becomes #1.

4) My books. I kind of like them. They're okay. Not as good as waffles, though.

my dad's coffee mug. when we moved to Texas some 10 (or more?) years ago my dad gave me his coffee mug. he told me he loved me and he was proud of me. yeah, i was 28, but it meant and means the world to me.

Mounted and framed picture of Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in TROTK (you know the pose with Aragorn resting his chin resting on the pommel of Narsil) signed by the main characters of the movie (minus the female actors). ..... Do i need to explain why this is a prized possession???

NFL Collectors Choice set of cards - Joe Montana Trilogy. Dont care if they are worth a pittance .... they are priceless to me.

HMMmmmm......my telescope of course, it has shown me more of the groovy universe than anything else in my life

Also, my rocket collection.... I build and fly some rather LARGE rockets and they have all exceeded my wildest expectations of them. Many have broken the speed of sound, all built by me of course, no premade dudes and dudettes for me

And my PSE Beast compound bow. I can hit a roofing nail head at 30 yards and bury another arrow down the first one's rear end with another.(dreadfully expensive though)

My music collection. I have more than 400 CDs in my collection. Frome Enya to Tool and Beethoven and back again, music is the greatest thing in my own life.

My Dad's watch collection. These were left to me after Dad died and I have about 25 watches in the set. Including a REAL Rolex Presidential that only comes out for some REALLY special occaisions.

My books, lastly, but not in my heart. They have taken me across the universe and back, on magical journeys, flown some really hard core space ships, fought some of the most evil demons and won, and taken me to the edge of heartbreak. My books are really groovy as well.

Ok, I lied, two more things, first, my new Mission hockey in-line skates!! Whoah!!!! What a ride those give!! Every person on the hockey rink just drools when I skate in..... besides, they're lots of fun.

And lastly, My huge car stereo, I have invested some $3000 dollars into my car stereo and YES you can hear me coming for a mile or better, I have personally built my system so I saved a ton in installation fees. My stereo gives me the greatest pleasure from driving the 50+ miles every day. I have been told I have concert levels or HIGHER in my car, so, it's REALLY loud in there especially if I'm playing Tool!!! !!!!!!!!~!!!

The little USB drive that holds every thought, journal entry, philosophical ponderings, homebrew recipes, college papers, personal research, every post I've ever made on the Internet, and the 100s of files produced in developing my fantasy series (15 years of work, dear god!) I've ever written.

Yeah, I've got backups. But this little thing travels with me wherever I go. It's a goddamn talisman, I tell you!

Aside from that, my tolkien painting is pretty special (see the fantasy art thread for pictures of this masterpiece!). It took me two years to finish.

My home theater brings me much pleasure.

Every batch of homebrew I make--participating in a 10,000 year-old magical practice of consciousness alteration.

But at any point, I can let it all go. All of it except my USB drive.

My Laptop. Has all my writing on it, and I just love it.

My pocket watch - given to me for my 25th birthday. It's special as it's a beautiful gift from my parents.

A copy of the Tree of Life - given to me by my grandmother when I was 5. It started my love of biology.

My Lord of the Rings Movie memorabilia collection (especially my stamp collection).

A box of "stuff" I've kept since Son-of-Seareach was born (has things like the first flower he picked me, the first curl of hair I cut off him, the first rock he nearly choaked on...that kind of stuff).

My book collection, especially my editions of LOTR as well as (of course) my SRD book/other-bits-and pieces-collection.

the earings Ger got me for xmas last year.

Ger's Alvarez Lawsuit Les Paul. that's special to me because our friend, K.L. Hill, who passed on in 2001, gave it to Ger.

my 120.00 Conn acoustic six-string that my dad bought me after i learned to play and had been playing for a year. he wouldn't buy me a guitar until he knew i wasn't just gonna play it for 3 weeks and then let it sit in the corner and gather dust. its beat to hell but Ger put a new set of Grover's on it a couple of years ago...great action, sweet and resonant. great sound for a hundred and twenty bucks.

I've had so many things lost/broken/otherwise ruined for me over the years that I've spent the last few years cultivating a Zen-like unattachment to the stuff I own. So I'm having a hard time coming up with a list of prized possessions. I've got a union membership pin that my dad used to wear on his hat, and the crocheted bedspread that my mom made for me, and plenty of kiddie artwork made by Batty and her sister. I have a poster marking the anniversary of the first moon landing that's signed by Buzz Aldrin, and a ticket stub signed by both Harry and Tom Chapin. And my copy of Runes signed by SRD.

Wait, there's one other thing, and it's sitting on my desk here at work. It's a picture of the kids at Sloan Lake in Denver, with the Rockies in the background. I always say it's my favorite picture because it shows all my favorite things in the world.

My well-worn set of Denon headphones that are basically falling apart. Purchased them around 15 years ago, but they're still my favorite for critical music listening.

My portable CD player.

My "desert island" CDs would include Bach, Beethoven, Mahler, The Beatles, Big Country, The Police, Simple Minds, Talking Heads, and a few others...but that is for Vespers.

My junior high yearbook from 1983.

My copy of the Atlas of the Land.

My copies of the Chronicles with the Darrell K. Sweet covers. Call me sentimental, but it was his art that drew me to the books in the first place.

My signed copy of Runes of the Earth.

A few vinyl LPs remain precious to me, such as the Music from Cosmos soundtrack, and the original double LP soundtracks for Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back.

My computer, of course.

My microwave oven and can opener. (Hey, when you're a bachelor, these things are important.)

My guitar, Double Fat Telecaster.
DVD collections.
My SRD books.
My house.
All five of my computers and all the games, software and mostly my cakewalk project files of most of my songs.
And more valuable than any of the above is the fact that I have enough clean underwear to last nearly 2 weeks worth. Gotta love that.
