"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Given the prominent role of snakes in ancient Greek religion (association of snakes with goddesses - Apollo slaying the Python) that first one is very interesting.
Not to mention the serpent in Genesis.
I wonder if all of those religious snakes go back to folk memories of the San people and their python?

I am SO gonna give up people do Maglus when I don't like them from now on.'To the god Maglus, I give the wrongdoer who stole the cloak of Servandus. Silvester, Riomandus (etc.) ... that he destroy him before the ninth day, the person who stole the cloak of Servandus...' Then follows a list of the names of 18 or 19 suspects. What happened to them is not recorded.
To the god Maglus, I give the wrongdoer who gave Holsety's true name, which gives great power and is shared only in trust, to the substitute for skipping class. Blah blah random names...that he destroy him before 5th period, lunch, the person who gave up my true name.
The snake thing is just plain interesting but this is entertaining as well.
Great stuff Syl, thanks for posting it!
